After making his debut for England in November 2017, Pickford has developed into one of the most important players under Southgate.

In the last three major tournaments, the Everton goalie has been England’s top scorer, and he appears likely to stay that way going into the next European Championship in Germany.

The 30-year-old is coming into the competition fresh off a remarkable Premier League season for Everton, in which he picked up 13 clean sheets—a total only surpassed by David Raya of Arsenal.

But as the tournament heats up, German international and former Liverpool player Hamann has questioned Pickford’s attitude and worries that it could cost England.

‘My worry would be Pickford. He’s a good keeper, but I think his temperament lets him down at times,’ Hamann said speaking on the ‘In The Zone’ podcast.

‘In a tournament when you might play seven games, there will be setbacks – you need a keeper who calms his teammates down. I think Pickford does the opposite and this is where I’ve got my worries and question marks. I don’t think England win a big title with Pickford.’

Prior to Sunday’s Euro 2024 Group C opening against Serbia, England boss Gareth Southgate got a major health boost as John Stones returned to training on Thursday after being sick.

The Man City defender contracted the infection earlier this week, and he was the lone player to skip Wednesday’s drills, raising questions over his readiness for the weekend.

All 26 of Southgate’s players were back in training on Thursday morning, according to the Three Lions, indicating that Stones has bounced back from his virus quickly and is apparently ready for action this weekend.
