Recently, there has been talks of a new contract for Simone Inzaghi at Inter for his excellent work with the club so far, but there are also plenty of interested clubs who will like to have him in their corner to help their troubled club.

More Details

The former Lazio manager has been tipped for a much bigger role in the future by Inter and Italy legend Sandro Mazzola, who believes that Inzaghi would be the ideal replacement for Pep Guardiola at Manchester City even if he’s holding out for a longer stay at Inter.

Mazzola, a 1968 Italy Euro winner, spent his entire career at Inter, playing for the Nerazzurri from 1960 to 1977.He scored 163 goals in 570 matches with the Nerazzurri, winning four Serie A titles and the Champions League twice.

Interviewed by SempreInter, Mazzola spoke about Inzaghi’s future at the Stadio Meazza saying that the Italian tactician has the potential to replace Guardiola at Manchester City. “I both hope and think that Inzaghi will stay at Inter for many years to come.”

“Then, if he continues to win trophies, who can send him away?” he said. “More than at Arsenal, I see Inzaghi hypothetically as a replacement for Guardiola at Manchester City, but as I said I hope he stays at Inter.”

Inzaghi is under contract with Inter until 2026, but the Nerazzurri have already begun talks to extend his stay to 2028. Inter President Beppe Marotta recently said Inzaghi’s extension would be a “formality.”

Mazzola was asked whether Inzaghi could become Inter’s Sir Alex Ferguson. “It would be beautiful if it happened. It could happen, but you never know. In Italian football this is very difficult,” he replied. “It is difficult to say where he needs to improve.”

“I would need to see him come out of a couple of complicated matches first. To see how he resolves these situations. However, generally speaking, he is outstanding at controlling and maintaining a dressing room, as well as tactically speaking and preparing for games.”

Inter are the only Serie A club still involved in three competitions. They were held to a 2-2 draw by strugglers Parma on Saturday and will visit Bayern Munich in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals on Tuesday next week.

In a related development, Jose Mourinho has been banned for three matches in the Turkish Super Lig after he pinched the nose of his Galatasaray counterpart Okan Buruk during the fiercely contested derby in Istanbul earlier in the week.

Mourinho’s Fenerbahce were beaten 2-1 by their eternal rivals in the Turkish Cup on Tuesday night. Always a heated affair to say the least, and not for the first time, there was a brawl between the players and coaching staff on the pitch at full-time.

Four players, two from each side were handed red cards after the full-time whistle: Fenerbahce’s Fred and Mert Hakan Yandas, Kerem Demibray and Baris Alper Yilmaz from Galatasaray in an ill-tempered match as both teams are also fighting for the league title.

As well as the players’ fights, Mourinho appeared to approach Galatasaray head coach Buruk and pinched him on the nose in the centre-circle while the chaos ensued around them. In reaction, Buruk fell to the floor, clutching his face in apparent agony.

The authorities have since confirmed that Mourinho will now serve a three-match ban as a result of his actions. Eight suspensions were dished out in total: Two for Galatasaray and six for Fenerbahce, including the Special One.
