After multiple stints on loan at EFL clubs, Blues head coach Mauricio Pochettino decided to keep Maatsen for the first half of 2023–2024.

That was the prize for the Netherlands Under-21 international who shone during Burnley’s championship-winning season and made an impression on the US preseason trip.

Maatsen would reportedly seize the opportunity to join Pep Guardiola’s Man City side, one of the teams purportedly keeping an eye on the matter, according to Football Insider.

The reason for City’s initial interest seems to be because Maatsen’s contract was set to expire in 2024, but Chelsea had exercised a 12-month option to extend it.

But if the league leaders decide to part ways with Sergio Gomez, who is now out of favor, Maatsen may be seen as an improvement and a good substitute. Maatsen is hoping to be included in the Chelsea team when they play Newcastle United on Saturday afternoon at St. James’ Park.

Meanwhile…

Erik ten Hag is anxious to prevent Jadon Sancho from making a “empty gesture,” therefore Manchester United is apparently willing to accept a “significant loss” on him.

Sancho has a disruptive impact on the rest of United’s team, according to manager Ten Hag, who is determined to get rid of the winger.

This season, Sancho and Ten Hag had a nasty falling out, with the Dutchman publicly criticizing his player in the media for his lack of effort in practice. After spending £73 million on him in 2021, United is now willing to suffer a “significant loss” on the player in the January transfer window.
