India 2022: Nigeria Make Historic Semi-Final Appearance, Germany Reach Last Four

Nigeria’s Flamingos will be making its first appearance in the semi-final of the 2022 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after a penalty win over the United States of America in Mumbai.

Mamuzo Edafe had given Nigeria the lead in the 27th minute from the penalty spot after a foul on Amina Bello with Video Assistant Referee (VAR) check.
The USA equalised after incessant pressure on the Nigerian defence as Amelia Villarreal’s strike was deflected into the back of the net by Folorunsho Comfort five minutes before half-time.
In the additional minutes of the second half, Flamingos coach, Bankole Olowookere seeing the prospect of penalty kicks introduced goalkeeper, Linda Jiwaku who replaced Faith Omilana.

The substitution paid off as Linda Jiwaku saved USA captain, Riley Jackson’s penalty which gave Mamzo Edafe the chance to convert the winning penalty for Nigeria.
Nigeria defeated USA 3-4 on penalties and qualified for the semi-final of the 2022 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup for the first time.
Up next for the West African side is a semi-final clash with either Colombia or Tanzania.

Germany also joined Nigeria in the semi-final after a 2-0 triumph over Brazil.

Mara Alber set up Maria Steiner who converted the first goal of the game for Germany in the 23rd minute.
It took Melina Krueger’s 95th-minute goal to seal a 2-0 win for the Germans.
Germany will face the winner of the other quarter-final match between Japan and Spain in the semi-final.
