Injured Inter Star Will Look To Recover For Serie A Title Showdown Against Napoli
Written By Onyeka Daniel
It promises to be a trying couple of matches for Italian Serie A champions, Inter Milan as they look to stay within sight of their set objectives for the season, even in the absence of some of their key players. It was recently revealed that their first choice goalkeeper, Yann Sommer has suffered an injury, a fractured thumb.
More Details
It was swiftly followed with a surgery, hence he’s expected to miss the next five to six matches (one month at least on the sideline) for the Nerazzurri and with a Scudetto race with Napoli on the line, they can hardly afford another mishap. Perhaps, this is why Simone Inzaghi has decided not to take a risk with Marcus Thuram.

Thus, he miss today’s game against Genoa and more importantly, next week’s Coppa Italia quarterfinal clash against Lazio. According to a report from Gazzetta dello Sport, the French forward is currently on the sidelines with an ankle problem, which he sustained during the 2-1 win over Fiorentina earlier this month.
While there was no serious underlying injury for Thuram, the Frenchman has still been feeling a fair bit of discomfort. He did manage to come off the bench against Juventus last weekend despite the knock, however, the 27-year-old did not look fully fit. There was an evident lack of sharpness and physicality to the Frenchman’s play.
The aim now is to try and get him back to his absolute best for Inter’s match against Napoli next Saturday. That match pits first against second in the Serie A table. There is a real sense that it could prove to be a title-decider. In his place in attack, we might see Joaquin Correa start alongside Lautaro Martinez.
So far, they’ve dropped points against the likes of AC Milan, Fiorentina, and Juventus since the start of February, but they can’t afford to do that today. Inter will need a win to temporarily go top of the table and put the league leaders under as much pressure as possible, as Napoli will be facing the high flying Como later on Sunday.
According to the report, there will be a few notable names in Inter’s starting line-up. Firstly, in attack, it will be Correa who starts. That will be just his second Serie A start this season. He previously started in a 5-0 win away to Hellas Verona in November and then, in goal it is an enforced change.
Sommer has started between the posts every match in the league for Inter this season, however, the Swiss has just undergone surgery on a thumb injury. Therefore, Josep Martinez will make his first Serie A start for Inter.

Lastly, in midfield, Hakan Calhanoglu has shown an alarming lack of sharpness since returning from injury at the start of February. Therefore, Kristjan Asllani will get the nod at the base of midfield, and Piotr Zielinski is also another option, to start or come in from the bench as Calhanoglu will have the chance to rest up ahead of next weekend’s clash with Napoli.
