Written By Onyeka Daniel

With the new year upon us, Serie A defending champions, Napoli will be hoping for a better luck after a disastrous start to the 2023-24 season, but the Partenopei have been hit with an injury news.

More Details

Italian goalkeeper Alex Meret is facing a spell of up to two months on the sidelines after picking up an injury in the second half of the team’s 0-0 draw with Monza in their final match of 2023.

The 2022-23 Scudetto winner limped off with what appeared to be a muscular issue with 15 minutes of regular time in that game that they would definitely like to forget in a hurry and he has since undergone medical assessments at the club’s training ground.

In a released, the club confirmed that Meret has suffered a second degree lesion of the semimembranosus muscle in his left hamstring. According to reports, an injury of that nature is likely to come with a recovery period of around two months, which could keep Meret out until the end of February or the beginning of March.

A huge Blow to Walter Mazzarri, who will also be without Victor Osimhen and Frank Zambo Anguissa for the AFCON tournament between January and probably the first two weeks of February.

In slightly more positive news, Napoli’s report confirmed that back-up ‘keeper Pierluigi Gollini completed Tuesday’s training session in full after recovering from injury struggles of his own.

Reports indicate that Napoli will have to pay Salernitana a fee between €2m and €3m. The Partenopei are reportedly prepared to hand over a three-and-a-half year contract to the 28-year-old Mazzocchi, who is expected to come in as an alternative option for captain and current right-back Giovanni Di Lorenzo.

Mazzocchi’s deal with Napoli will tie him to the Stadio Maradona until the end of the 2026-27 season. Though the details of the operation have now been defined, Napoli still need to make Mazzocchi’s deal official, which could happen in the coming days according to reports. A medical is expected to be completed on Wednesday. In terms of Napoli’s outgoings, 23-year-old right-back Alessandro Zanoli is expected to join Genoa on loan.
