This weekend, Inter Milan will be facing Lazio away from home in their round 16 of the Italian Serie A and the Nerazzurri will have a rare opportunity to widen the gap between them and the chasing packs in the race for the Scudetto title.

More Details

After Juventus failed to win against Genoa away from home, the Nerazzurri will have the chance to stretch their lead to five points, but first, they will have to get the better of a Lazio side that is starting to find some kind of consistency in recent games.

But Inter will have to prosecute this match without their Chilean star Alexis Sanchez, as he’s reportedly suffering from muscle fatigue. The Nerazzurri will travel to Rome on Saturday ahead of Sunday night’s clash and the former Manchester United and Barcelona star won’t be joining his teammates for the journey.

The former Arsenal star had to forfeit due to slight fatigue. Thus he will remain in Milano for the weekend and try to recover his energy levels for the midweek Coppa Italia encounter against Bologna.

The veteran was without a club during the summer after ending his collaboration with Olympique Marseille. Eventually, he made his return to Inter on a free transfer for a second stint. However, he missed out on the club’s pre-season preparations.

Since then, the 34-year-old hasn’t always been in an optimal physical condition, making just five appearances in Serie A this season, only one as a starter. He has yet to make a direct goal contribution in the league. Nevertheless, the experienced striker has been more efficient in the Champions League. He made six appearances in Europe, four from the start, scoring two goals in the process.

Sanchez thus joins a host of Nerazzurri stars who are unavailable for the trip to the Italian capital. The list includes Juan Cuadrado, Denzel Dumfries and Stefan de Vrij. For Inter manager, Simone Inzaghi, this is a chance to put some of his past behind him as he faces his former employers this weekend.

He joined Inter in 2021 and before then, he was the coach of Lazio and he will have to dispel a taboo that has been haunting him since leaving the Italian capital. The 47-year-old spent the vast majority of his playing career at Lazio. He then took charge of the first team as head coach in 2016.

He remained at the helm till 2021 when he opted to sign for Inter. But he hasn’t been able to defeat his former club when returning to the Italian capital. Since taking charge of Inter, Inzaghi lost the two away fixtures against Maurizio Sarri’s Lazio.

Curiously both encounters ended 3-1 in favor of the Biancocelesti. Inter’s form away from home should be a source of worry for Lazio and the chance to increase the gap at the top of the table would be an opportunity that will be too good to let slip.

Meanwhile…

Inter defensive duo, Stefan de Vrij and Denzel Dumfries aren’t available currently due to injuries but it looks like their return is much closer than imagined. De Vrij sustained an adductor knock during the 3-0 win over Napoli at the Maradona Stadium. He had to leave the pitch in the early stages of the match.

The same match that his fellow country man, Dumfries picked up an injury. The report states that De Vrij will miss the midweek Coppa Italia fixture against Bologna as well, but should be available for the next weekend’s Serie A encounter against Lecce. Dumfries’ recovery could require an additional week.

With Benjamin Pavard already recovering enough to join the team for the trip against Lazio, this news will be sweet music to the ears of Inzaghi after the report that Juan Cuadrado will soon undergo surgery, leaving Matteo Darmian as the only natural option for the right wingback role.
