On Friday night, Inter Miami fell short of New York City FC 2-1 in a memorial match organized to celebrate Lionel Messi’s unprecedented eighth Ballon d’Or victory.

Fans thought they would never see Messi again when Miami lost in the MLS Cup Playoffs, but that was before MLS organized a “Noche d’Or” friendly to give him a fitting send-off. At DRV PNK Stadium, Messi addressed the audience and displayed his Ballon d’Or trophy before the match began.
Miami scheduled a match against NYCFC during the playoffs because the latter team had also been eliminated in the regular season. To dampen the mood in Fort Lauderdale, they defeated a Miami squad that started Messi, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba.
Talles Magno of NYCFC put the visitors ahead just before halftime after a quiet first half. He stayed controlled as he dribbled past Kamal Miller of Miami and found the far corner. However, it soon became two when Robbie Robinson gave Miami a late reply after Julian Fernandez scored a strong goal two minutes into the second half.
Messi’s remarks prior to Friday’s game were appreciated by the crowd, despite the fact that they marked the end of his 2023. “First of all I want to say thank you for coming, for this beautiful ceremony,” Messi said to the crowd. “For me, it’s something amazing to share this moment with you.
“It has been amazing and next year we have important tournaments to face together. Thank you everyone and good night.”

Inter Miami CF’s head coach, Gerardo “Tata” Martino, has declared that the Club is once again interested in bringing in former teammate Luis Suárez during the upcoming winter transfer window.
Martino stated that the team is still interested in signing the 36-year-old Uruguayan during a press conference the day before Miami’s final MLS home game, which ended in a 2-2 draw with Charlotte FC.
