Inter Miami’s Resurgence: Messi-Led Squad Hit New Height Ahead Of CWC Showdown

Written by Patrick Echatah

Things are really heating up for Lionel Messi and Inter Miami CF, and it’s happening at just the right time.

More Details

In their last game before next month’s FIFA Club World Cup, Messi led the Herons to a decisive 5-1 home victory over the Columbus Crew on Saturday night.

The talismanic forward had an incredible performance, scoring two goals and assisting on three others. This showing was almost as impressive as his one-goal, five-assist effort in a 6-2 win against the New York Red Bulls last year, which earned him a spot in the MLS record books.

Messi joined the Crew’s Diego Rossi as the only players in league history to have two regular-season games with at least five goal contributions. Rossi achieved this previously with LAFC.

The reigning MLS MVP not only scored two goals himself, but also assisted on goals by Tadeo Allende, Luis Suárez, and Fafà Picault, contributing to Miami’s impressive three-game unbeaten streak (2 wins, 0 losses, 1 draw).

“Clearly, he’s the best player in history to play this sport,” head coach Javier Mascherano told reporters of Messi, who has 5g/4a during this three-game stretch. “And we have to understand that when he’s not excelling too much, it’s because some of us are failing. That’s the reality.”

“… That’s the admiration: seeing someone else do what you can’t do. You want to, but you can’t.”

Messi and Inter Miami are playing much better lately, a big change from their recent struggles where they only won one of eight games. That rough period started after their 1-0 victory against the Columbus Crew on April 19 at Huntington Bank Field.

“Of course winning like this, in this manner, does give us confidence,” said Mascherano. “It shows us that if we are brave, if we remain calm, if we have the desire to compete, we can match up toe-to-toe with anyone – especially in MLS.”
