Consequently, the midfielder is increasingly likely to leave Inter Milan in January amid growing interest from bitter rivals Napoli as according to a report from Corriere della Sera, the 26-year-old could try to force his exit next month after failing to nail down a starting spot in the team.

Inter refused to sell the former Sassuolo star last winter despite Roma’s valid attempt to lure him back to the Stadio Olimpico when Simone Inzaghi was coach as the former manager was reluctant to lose his backup midfielder midway through the season where they were pursuing different targets.

Therefore, the Nerazzurri slapped a prohibitive €40m price tag on him to fend off the Giallorossi and then, he seemed close to leaving Inter in the summer, with Atletico Madrid bidding to take him to La Liga but that changed after Cristian Chivu replaced Inzaghi as coach.

The former Parma coach reportedly promised the Italy international a chance to revive his career at San Siro, ultimately convincing him to stay but so far, Frattesi has failed to convince the manager Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Petar Sucic and Piotr Zielinski playing ahead of him plus summer signing, Andy Diouf.

Hence, for Frattesi, he’s now eager to sever ties with the club and Napoli are lurking in the shadows, waiting for an opportunity to pounce but for the reigning Serie A champions, they consider him as backup option to Manchester United’s Kobbie Mainoo while Inter would prefer a move abroad.

In a related development, Inter and Hakan Calhanoglu will not discuss a contract renewal until the end of the season, acording to Gazzetta dello Sport as the parties will meet for showdown talks next summer when he will enter the final year of his current contract.

Calhanoglu’s future at San Siro emerged as one of the hottest topics during the summer with Fenerbahce and Galatasaray very much desperate to lure the 31-year-old midfielder to back to his home country and the player was reportedly willing to consider the move too.

Despite contacting the player’s agent, the two clubs backed off after being informed of Inter’s €35 million asking price and even after a reported break down in the relationship between him and some of his teammates, he has returned stronger this season.

Now, instead of leaving, Chivu has made him central to his project, and the former AC Milan star has rewarded that trust with outstanding performances with five goals and one assist, Calhanoglu is Inter’s second-best goalscorer in Serie A this season despite missing two penalties too.

Yet, his contract at San Siro expires in 2027, forcing Inter to address his long-term future sooner rather than later.Still, the parties won’t meet until the end of the season and the most likely scenario is an exit as that would be the last time the club can get any form of fee for him.

For his possible replacement, the club could decide to look inwards with Nicolo Barella often playing in that role recently plus Zielinski but there is also the option of going to the transfer market with Atalanta’s Ederson a prime candidate, but the club might find it hard dealing with the La Dea.

They already had that experience with the Bergamo-based club in the summer transfer window when they tried to sign Ademola Lookman but Ederson’s agent has already been quoted with a figure around €40m for the midfielder even if he mentioned clubs outside Italy as his most likely destination.
