Inter Milan Add Salzburg Star To The List Of Possible Dumfries Replacement

Written By Onyeka Daniel

After sealing the Serie A title, in one of his first interview, Inter Milan coach, Simone Inzaghi was very vocal about the need to strengthen the team for the rigors of the 2024-25 season and beyond and the club is ready to back their manager in the transfer window, but within their own financial strength.

More Details

One of the areas of the team that they plan to strengthen is the attack, with names like Albert Gudmundsson and Joshua Zirkzee amongst the list to join Mehdi Taremi who has already agreed to a free transfer move from Porto in the summer. Nonetheless, the club will also look to improve other areas of the team, especially the defense.

Consequently, the Nerazzurri are already on the hunt for a player that will strengthen their right wing-back position, especially if they manage to sell Dutch international, Denzel Dumfries and they now have their eyes fixed on Salzburg’s Amar Dedic.

While names like Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Michael Kayode and Yukinari Sugawara have been linked with the Nerazzurri, La Gazzetta dello Sport report today that Inter have their eyes firmly fixed on Austria because they are keen admirers of Dedic, who is seen as a replacement for Dumfries.

The Dutchman is heading towards an exit from Inter, with his current deal expiring in the summer of 2025. They want to sell Dumfries this summer because they do not want to make the same mistake as what they did with Milan Skriniar, who left on a free transfer.

Salzburg currently value Dedic at about €20 million and that is because his contract expires in the summer of 2027. Relations between the two clubs are quite positive and Dedic has previously been close to joining Roma but he ended up rejecting the move. He also made a good impression when the two team played against each other in the UEFA Champions League group stage.

Inter are following him and it won’t be easy to deal with Salzburg in this case, but the sale of Dumfries could help the Italian Champions. Notwithstanding, they will still look to beat down the €20m price tag, and it should not be forgotten that they’ve already signed Tajon Buchanan in January while also having Matteo Darmian in the team.

According to a report from SportMediaset, the Nerazzurri want to move quickly for Gudmundsson, and could offer Mattia Zanotti plus cash to help complete their attack for next season.

This season, Inter have had four senior strikers in the squad – Lautaro Martinez, Marcus Thuram, Alexis Sanchez, and Marko Arnautovic. And the management has been quite clear. Martinez and Thuram have been the first-choice starters, while Sanchez and Arnautovic have provided veteran backup options. For Inzaghi, this setup has not always been sufficient.

Particularly when one or two of the strikers have been out with an injury, the attack has quickly gotten stretched thin. Therefore, Inzaghi wants to see Inter add another forward who can give the squad greater depth. Particularly with the extra matches from the new Champions League format and the Club World Cup.

So, the Nerazzurri coach wants as many options as possible in attack. With Inzaghi asking the club for five strikers next season, the club are starting to strategize. And there is no doubt which player is at the top of the Nerazzurri’s list. They want to sign Genoa forward Gudmundsson. The 26-year-old would cost at least €30 million.

That is no small amount for Inter. But the Nerazzurri feel that they could potentially make a deal work. Firstly, Inter could aim for an initial paid loan containing a purchase obligation. Then, the Nerazzurri will try and convince Genoa with an offer also containing a player going the other way.

Young Wingback Zanotti looks to be the player who Inter will try to tempt Genoa with. But Inter do not want to wait forever to see whether a deal is possible. Their plan is to move swiftly, to anticipate the competition of other clubs and see whether they will have to change tracks quickly.

Additionally, the report also has it that Inzaghi will also evaluate some of the forwards who return to the club from loan for a potential role next season. These include Joaquin Correa, Martin Satriano, Valentin Carboni, Sebastiano Esposito, and Francesco Pio Esposito.
