Inter Milan Have Several Reasons To Pursue Buchanan, Not Just To Replace Juan Cuadrado

Written By Onyeka Daniel

With the January transfer window fast approaching, Inter Milan can’t wait to get busy and give their manager one or two signings to help the team in their title charge as they look to protect their four points lead at the top.

More Details

Injuries had meant that the club has to revisit their previous idea of not signing any player during the short winter transfer window that doesn’t leave much room for maneuvering. One area of the team that the management will focus on is the right wingback role after Colombian winger, Juan Cuadrado underwent surgery and is expected to be out for at least two to three months.

This has left the team short staffed in a department that requires plenty of energy and running. But there is more to this pursuit of Tajon Buchanan than just replacing Cuadrado. The Nerazzurri contract talks with Denzel Dumfries are linked to their ongoing pursuit of the Canada winger, according to from Sky Sport Italia.

Dumfries is at a bit of a crossroads at Inter in terms of his contract situation. The 27-year-old’s current deal runs out at the end of June 2025. Therefore, Inter are absolutely vehement about extending Dumfries’s contract before this summer. If the Nerazzurri and Dumfries cannot agree on a new deal, then the club will aim to sell the player in the summer of 2024 with plenty of admirers from England.

Inter have absolutely no intention of seeing Dumfries head into the final season of his contract. But there is still a fair bit of work to be done in contract talks between the parties. Inter are not prepared to make an offer as high as what Dumfries and his representatives are demanding, even if it’s being reported that about €1m separates them from what the club is offering and what the player is demanding for.

In the meantime, Inter are working to sign Buchanan. The 24-year-old Canadian international is a player who the Nerazzurri have earmarked as a major reinforcement on the right flank. Dumfries remains, of course. But the Dutchman has fitness issues of his own – he is currently out with a muscle injury. And Matteo Darmian is needed as cover in defense as well as at right-wingback.

So Inter will aim to sign Buchanan next month to beef up their right flank. But the Canadian’s arrival could change the complexion of contract talks between Inter and Dumfries. If Buchanan is in the squad and is fitting in well, Inter could start to view him not just as a short-term replacement for Cuadrado, but also as a long-term replacement for Dumfries.

And then this could mean that there is less pressure on Inter to agree a new deal with Dumfries. Therefore, it could become more likely that the Nerazzurri would cash in on the Dutchman in the summer. It makes more sense as the club may be forced to sell another top player in the coming summer transfer window to stay within financial fair play range after selling Andre Onana to Manchester United to a sizable fee.

The club CEO Beppe Marotta, has made Piotr Zielinski, Mehdi Taremi, and Tiago Djalo major free transfer targets for next summer. Transfer market expert Alfredo Pedulla, confirmed the trio as an early cornerstones of the Nerazzurri transfer strategy for next summer. It is no secret that inter tend to go after players on expiring contracts with Marotta at the helm.

Moreover, that approach from the veteran executive extends back much further than his time at the Nerazzurri. For example, Juventus signed players like Paul Pogba, Andrea Pirlo, and Sami Khedira without transfer fees whilst Marotta had been running transfers for the Bianconeri. At Inter, all of Marcus Thuram, Hakan Calhanoglu, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan have arrived on free transfers.

This strategy has proven especially useful in recent years. Inter have had to navigate major financial difficulties and restrictions during the pandemic. And next summer, Marotta is likely to stick to his usual modus operandi. One of the key facets that makes Marotta so successful in pursuing free transfer opportunities is how early the Inter CEO tends to move.

That is certainly the case with three big targets for next summer. Both Lille defender Djalo and Porto striker Taremi are players who had already been on Inter’s radar in the past couple windows. The Nerazzurri already established contact with the duo’s agents over the past several months. That did not lead to transfers for fees. But the ongoing contacts have remained.

Marotta is very aware of when a player is nearing the end of their contract. And with both Djalo and Taremi, Nerazzurri CEO is now ready to pounce. Both Lille defender Djalo and Porto striker Taremi are players who had already been on Inter’s radar in the past couple windows.

The Nerazzurri already established contact with the duo’s agents over the past several months and would continue to do so until the next summer transfer window and hope to reach an agreement before then.

With Zielinski, Marotta is said to have already had a deal in place with him and his agent over a three years contract, on a €4m plus salary. Napoli president, Aurelio de Laurentiis more or less confirmed that the player would be leaving the club in a recent interview.
