Inter Milan Might Be Under A Fresh Investigation As Barella Renews With The Club

Written By Onyeka Daniel

It looks like Oaktree Capital may be starting their reign as owners of Inter Milan dealing with an investigation that they’ve no hand in and could vastly affect the value of the club, thereby affecting their ability to get a huge profit from selling the club.

More Details

According to recent reports from Italy, the Nerazzurri are under investigation. At the moment there are neither suspects nor hypotheses of crime, but the Milan Prosecutor’s Office has opened a fact-finding file presented by the “ Fondazione Jdentità Bianconera.”

Few days ago, there was a report that the club was under a capital gain investigation, pertaining to some of their deals with another Italian club, AS Roma, but the club from Lombardy were not in a risky position on that investigation, and so far nothing has been heard about it again.

According to a report from ANSA and Calcio e Finanza, the file, through some lawyers is laying allegations of irregularities in relation to Inter’s registration in the 2023/24 Serie A. The complaint was taken over by the Milan investigators, with the prosecutor Marcello Viola assigning the case to Roberta Amadeo, Pasquale Addesso and Giovanni Polizzi.

Perhaps, the newly crowned Serie A champions were part of the clubs that Bologna director, Claudio Fenucci was referring to when he warned that ‘those who amass debt without being able to repay it alters equal sporting competition.’ The Nerazzurri just won the Scudetto, their 20th, so will have a second star added to their badge.

But just days after the title was sealed, owners Suning and the Zhang family lost control of the club. They failed to repay the loan to Oaktree that amounted to €385m including interest, so Inter were essentially repossessed by Oaktree.

The prosecutor In Milan have now opened an investigation into how Inter registered for the 2023-24 campaign, but it Is currently purely at the stage of gathering information to see if there has been any crime committed. The comments from Bologna CEO Fenucci in his presentation to the Senate on reforms in Italian football seemed to also be pointed towards Inter’s situation.

“We can do something to make some parameters of national licences more rigid. Those who amass debt without being able to repay it in future is using resources it doesn’t have and effectively alters equal sporting competition.”

Another of his statements was thought to be aimed at Genoa and Sampdoria. “There were some clubs who had economic difficulties and negotiated with the Government on how to pay their outstanding taxes, while in the past other clubs in similar situations were relegated.

“This cannot last, it is not possible to continue having those without resources still competing on the market.”Fenucci also joined in the warning of the Lega Serie A that if projects to build or reconstruct stadiums are not done quickly, Italy risks losing the right to host several EURO 2032 games alongside Turkey.

Nicolo Barella has signed a contract extension until the end of June 2029, with the club confirming the new deal in an official announcement. He joined the Nerazzurri from from his boyhood club Cagliari in the summer of 2019. During his time at Inter, Barella has grown into one of the team’s most important players.

He has made a total of 235 appearances for the Nerazzurri to date. He has scored 22 goals in the process.Having arrived as a talented, all-action box-to-box midfielder, Barella has grown into a player who does it all in the midfield battle for Inter. The 27-year-old was a regular in Inter’s starting eleven during the just concluded season, where they’re stormed to the Serie A title.

That was the seventh trophy Barella has won with the Nerazzurri, and he was also a key player when Inter won the 2020-21 Serie A title. He has furthermore won the Coppa Italia twice and the Supercoppa italiana on three occasions. Barella has started for Inter in the Europa League and Champions League final.

Last summer Arsenal and Manchester United showed interest in bringing Barella to the Premier League. Real Madrid, Manchester City and Liverpool are also long-term admirers.

But Barella’s desire has always been to stay at Inter, by all accounts. Therefore, the negotiations have gone smoothly.
