Inter Star Returns From Injury As Refereeing Error Continues Despite Comfortable Win Over Fiorentina
Written By Onyeka Daniel
It was a return to winning ways for former Serie A champions, Inter Milan yesterday as they saw off the challenge from a stubborn Fiorentina side at the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium to get their season back on track after the recent setback that they suffered against Napoli.

While that loss to the Partenopei was characterized by a huge error from the referee, there was another episode against the La Viola but it wasn’t enough to stop them from grabbing all three points, thanks to a brace from Hakan Calhanoglu and a debut goal from Petar Sucic.

The result aside, controversy continues to trail the match officials from Inter’s last two games as former Serie A referee, Mauro Bergonzi criticized the refereeing team during last night’s match between Inter Milan and Fiorentina as we could have seen a similar situation to the Napoli match.
Speaking to Domenica Sportiva, Bergonzi blasted centre referee Simone Sozza, as after Maurizio Mariani sealed their fate in Saturday’s defeat to Napoli, Sozza added to the controversy. The 38-year-old failed to sanction two cynical fouls from Pietro Comuzzo on Francesco Pio Esposito.
Despite wrestling the Italian striker inside the box in ‘WWE’ fashion, Comuzzo got away unpunished and not even an extended VAR review prompted Sozza to overturn his initial decision, leaving Cristian Chivu and his staff fuming as the score was still level at that time.
However, despite Sozza’s best effort to deny Inter two clear penalties, Chivu’s side found a way to win thanks to a great strike from Calhanoglu, Sucic first goal and a second from Calhanoglu, which ironically came from the spot. Hence, Inter bounced back from last weekend’s upset in Naples.
“Not an easy night for Sozza, many incidents. In the first half, Comuzzo held Esposito, and he overlooked it: for me, it was a clear penalty. In the second half, there’s another hold by Comuzzo on Esposito. It’s very obvious, Sozza should have seen it and made a decision on the pitch.” Bergonzi stated.
“Comuzzo puts his arm around the Inter striker’s neck – it looks like a wrestling move, a Californian choke. He grabs him by the neck and brings him to the ground: it’s an unquestionable penalty. Why didn’t the VAR intervene and send the referee to the monitor? He queried.
“We were stopped for a minute and a half, the VAR evaluated it, but it must be the referee who decides at the monitor. I don’t know why he didn’t go. This is an undisputed penalty – a mistake by the referee and the VAR.” He continued in his assessment.
“In the 88th minute, Bonny is fouled by Viti – second yellow and red, correct penalty. The left knee clearly hits Bonny’s right ankle but that non-awarded penalty for the clear foul on Esposito remains a huge stain.” He concluded and the result from last night may not be the only positive things for the club this week.

According to recent reports from Italy, Marcus Thuram has returned to first-team training with the rest of the squad today, boosted the attack for a run of important games that are still up ahead as the forward has missed the last five games due to injury.
The French international has been out action for a full month after picking up a knock during the Champions League win over Slavia Prague at the end of September and he has not featured for the Nerazzurri since that 3-0 where he won the man of the match award.
Thuram was spotted limping around the press area after full-time, but initially claimed that there was ‘nothing to worry about’ regarding a potential injury. He has since missed 30 days of action with a hamstring injury, during which time he has missed four Serie A matches, one in the UCL.

He also missed the October international break with the France national team and according to reports from Sky Sport Italia, Thuram is now back in the fold and has returned to training but remains to be seen if he will be fit enough to feature when Intrr take on Hellas Verona at the Bentegodi in the early kick-off on Sunday.
