Inter Will Have A Change Of Strategy In The January Transfer Window With One Clear Advantage
In the late hours of yesterday, the confirmation finally arrived that Inter Milan defender, Denzel Dumfries had undergone surgery to repair his ankle and for the former Serie A champions, this has now altered their transfer plans as they will now look to make a signing as soon as possible.
More Details
The initial plan was to sign a defender that can play across the three positions in their defense and then replace any player that leaves in the winter with reports that Davide Frattesi is seeking for a move but all that has now changed with a new position now needed reinforcements.

Consequently, they’re reportedly beginning to consider their options to replace the Dutchman who is expected to be unavailable for several months after surgery, and for now, they’ve several options on their radar but will now focus on just one due to several factors.
Dumfries went under the knife in London earlier this week in an attempt to fix an ankle issue that had been taking longer than expected to resolve. Initial reports suggest that the Dutchman could be unavailable for a further two to three months but not longer than that.
So far, Inter have been using Luis Henrique and Carlos Augusto as their replacements on the right flank, but heading into the business end of the season, they could be tempted into a potential deal during the January transfer window according to a report from Gazzetta dello Sport.
A decision has not yet been made either way, but Gazzetta suggests that the Nerazzurri could be keen on finding a replacement in January, whether than be a permanent solution or a short-term fix until the summer as the Dumfries staying with the club beyond those season is not guaranteed either.
This is because the former PSV star has changed his agent and is now represented by the Epic Sports Agency run by Ali Barat who reportedly has a wide range of contacts in England and with a release clause set at €25m valid outside Italy until July 15, it is very likely that he is preparing for a new experience in the EPL.
As for Inter, one of the names that is reportedly of interest to them is Genoa’s Brooke Norton-Cuffy who moved to Serie A from Arsenal two years ago. He was in and out of the first-team due to injury last season, but has become a guaranteed starter in 2025-26 even with the change of coach from Patrick Vieira to Daniele De Rossi.
For this season, the former England youth international has played the full 90 minutes in 14 out of 15 Serie A matches, only missing one through suspension. If Inter were to make a move for Norton-Cuffy in January, a transfer fee of about €20m will be required, that is if they can convince the player and his club to sell him.

Meanwhile, Inter’s First choice was Atalanta’s Marco Palestra, but are aware that a deal with La Dea, especially in January and especially after the Ademola Lookman debacle, will not be easy to pull off, which is why they’re looking at other options and have a few cards to play for their new target.
They’ve a solid relationship with Norton-Cuffy’s agency, RocNation, who were also involved in various Romelu Lukaku deals, and also represent Nerazzurri wing-back Federico Dimarco, plus Luis Henrique whom they signed from Marseille in the last summer transfer.
On the other hand, Hellas Verona’s Rafik Belghali has also been mentioned as a more sensible option for January but that would be when they fail to get Norton-Cuffy, but for now, Cristian Chivu will have to continue to rely on available options while Andy Diouf can also play in that position, even if he’s naturally a midfielder.
As for Dumfries, he has broken his silence after undergoing ankle surgery in London and he posted a picture on Instagram of himself in his hospital bed at the Fortius Clinic in London, where he had the the operation after picking up the injury during the 2-0 Serie A victory over Lazio on November 9.

His recovery took longer than expected, and it was decided that he would go under the knife to stabilise the ankle. “Surgery went well. It’s been a tough month with a lot of emotions, but I’m glad the worst is behind me. Now full focus on recovery and I’ll do my best to be back on the pitch as soon as possible!”
