Today at the Giuseppe Meazza stadium, there was almost no sign of the second half jittery shown by reigning Serie A champions, Inter Milan in their last league game that saw them play a 2-2 draw against Udinese after taking a 2-goal first half lead.

They wore a special edition jersey dedicated to MotoGP legend and lifelong Nerazzurri supporter Valentino Rossi and today, they also took a 2-goal first half lead, conceded immediately after the restart, but they took control of the game to win 3-1 and remain in firm control of the title race.

Notwithstanding, their manager was still upset about a detail towards the end of the game and after the final whistle, Simone Inzaghi admitted that he got angry with one of his players during the victory over Cagliari. The Nerazzurri once again were dominant in the first half, leading 2-0 through a Marko Arnautovic goal.

He then provided the assist for Lautaro Martinez to dink it over the goalkeeper for the second goal. Considering Arnautovic was close to the bench at that moment, Inzaghi grabbed him for a bear hug, while Marcus Thuram kicked the Austrian playfully up the backside.

“Arnautovic did so well, he had a great performance today. Lautaro finished it off, but Arna did most of the work on that goal with the assist,” Inzaghi told DAZN. Once more, they came out for the restart too sluggishly and allowed Roberto Piccoli a free header, but there was no comeback this time.

Instead a header from Yann Bisseck sealed the win. “We really cared about this match and knew it would not be easy. We got distracted for their goal, but the team remained concentrated for the rest of the game. We continue this journey, it’s a struggle, but it makes us proud.”

“Last season we played 49 games in total, this year we’re already on 48 and it’s only April 12. It is a very heavy season, but we must adjust and are doing so with everyone sacrificing themselves to help.” Yet Inzaghi was also infuriated with Thuram late on for giving away the ball and sparking a Cagliari counter-attack.

“I did get angry with Marcus and I told him so at the final whistle, he should’ve dealt with that situation differently. He won’t do it again, it only takes a moment to reopen a match.” This tops off a perfect week for Inter, who earned a 2-1 Champions League quarter-final victory away to Bayern Munich on Tuesday evening.

The second leg of that tie is at San Siro next Wednesday, but Nicola Zalewski is in doubt after hobbling off with a muscular problem. “We go into this appointment with a lot of confidence, knowing that we are facing one of the 3-4 best teams in the world,” assured Inzaghi.

“We’ve got to replicate that first leg performance, playing with pace, aggression and organisation.” The Bavarians were also in action this evening, playing a 2-2 Bundesliga draw with Borussia Dortmund as they failed to take advantage of Bayer Leverkusen’s draw against Union Berlin earlier in the day.

Meanwhile, for Arnautovic, who was awarded the man of the match, he insists that the team has to believe in their chances of winning the Treble this season, which would be his second, while Yann Bisseck enjoyed his goal against the Sardinia club. Arnautovic was inspirational for the team and he rightly won the Serie A MVP of the match.

The Austrian was part of the Inter squad that won the Treble in 2010, so he could in theory be one of the few players to get that hat-trick on two different occasions. “We are Inter, so naturally we believe, but there’s a long way to go. I was at the 2010 Treble, but it was basically like being a fan cheering them on,” he told DAZN.

Jose Mourinho, who was the coach of that 2010 team, claimed that Arnautovic urged him to focus on himself rather than Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who left in the summer of 2009. “No, that’s a lie, I would never say that, I have too much respect for him. I was happy to be with those champions, but now we look forward,” assured Arnautovic.

Inter are therefore sure they will remain at least three points clear of Napoli at the top of the Serie A table when they host Bayern Munich for the second leg of that Champions League quarter-final on Wednesday evening. “It took me a while to score another goal, but I am happy we played well and must continue like this,” Bisseck told DAZN.

“Sometimes we feel a bit tired at the start of the second half, but we reacted well this time.” He further added. After their second leg UCL clash against Bayern Munich, Inter will then face Bologna in the league before facing AC Milan in the second leg of the Coppa Italia semi-final clash, two fixtures that will definitely have an huge impact on their chances of winning a treble this season.
