Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez has said that he is focused on the current season with the Metropolitan club as talks of a possible 2026 summer departure to Barcelona continues to dominate the headlines.

During the summer transfer window, Álvarez was widely reported to be one of Barcelona’s leading targets with club president Joan Laporta understood to have identified him as a preferred option.

At the time, the player’s agent did little to dismiss the rumours, leaving the possibility of a move to Camp Nou open particularly with an eye on 2026.

However, more recent reports suggest that Barcelona’s enthusiasm has since diminished with the Catalan giants believed to have cooled their interest as circumstances and priorities have evolved.

Addressing the speculation, Álvarez acknowledged the rumours while speaking in an interview with Marca, confirming that he was aware of the discussions surrounding his future.

“Look, it doesn’t bother me. I try not to pay much attention, but I know what’s being said. It’s all over social media. I think it’s more what’s being said online than what’s actually happening. I’m very focused on this season, on what lies ahead with Atletico Madrid. So, I try to tune it out and think about myself, about continuing to grow as a player, and about winning.”

The World Cup winner is certain that with the club’s recent investment, it shows ambition to compete at the highest level and that gives him motivation to continue.

“Yes, I think that nowadays we’re in a position to compete with anyone, and as I was saying before, the club has been growing a lot. In this last transfer window, we’ve brought in many high-caliber, high-quality players, and I think that, looking ahead, the club still has room for improvement.”
