Portland Thorns’ Crystal Dunn returned to the field of play five months after the birth of her son.
“I don’t also want other mothers in the league to now think they’ve got to do what Crystal Dunn did.” Rhian Wilkinson told Just Women’s Sports.
Five months after having son Marcel, Dunn scored the game-winner in stoppage time to send the Portland Thorns to the NWSL championship game.

“It is incredible what she did. But it was done very carefully with a lot of very, very skilled people supporting her return to play.” Says Portland Thorns head coach Rhian Wilkinson on Crystal Dunn’s incredible return to professional soccer just five months after the birth of her son.

Dunn has been slowly increasing her minutes, having also participated in a USWNT camp in October.
Sunday’s game marked her longest stretch on the pitch this season, with over 25 minutes of playing time.

The USWNT was drawn into Group E alongside 2019 runner-up the Netherlands, Vietnam, and the eventual winner of the Group A intercontinental playoff.
Interestingly, Group E will compete exclusively in New Zealand, which is hosting the tournament in tandem with Australia.
Competing in New Zealand saves nations a significant amount of travel strain.
