At least, Barcelona coach, Xavi Hernandez when asked was very truthful to leave the door open to a possible exit, which has been the reality all along.

After activating a third economic lever, Barcelona will be looking to do the last piece of business that will enable them register all the players that they’ve signed so far and even go for new targets, with Cesar Azpiliqueta, Marcos Alonso and Bernardo Silva still being courted by the Blaugrana.

According to reports from England, Manchester United already have a deal in place with Barcelona for de Jong (€80 million) but the player seems to be holding up on the deal.

The holdup in the deal is due to an outstanding amount in the region of £17 million in deferred wages owed to De Jong by Barca after deferring payments on his wages during the pandemic.

Manchester United coach, Erik Ten Hag is said to have spoken to de Jong recently and is prepared to wait until the last minute to get his top transfer target, but will face competition from another English Premier League side.

Chelsea are reported to have declared their intentions to sign the player over the weekend and will be entering negotiations with Barcelona soon over the possibility of signing the Dutch midfielder.

The Blues have two distinct advantage over their rival. One, they will be able to offer the player UEFA Champions League football for the coming season and two, Barcelona are interested in signing two Chelsea defenders, Azpiliqueta and Alonso.

If Chelsea can meet Barcelona’s demands, then they will have to be successful where United fell. Tuchel must still persuade de Jong to leave his life in Spain.

Ideally, it would be a loan move, with both clubs sharing his salary.
