Japan won their first-ever Shebelieves Cup title after a hard-fought 2-1 win over Olympic champions and host, United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) on Thursday.

Both sides had defeated Colombia and Australia, respectively, with the Asian side having a superior goal difference and needing a point to win the title.

USWNT had to win the deciding match to win a record-extending eighth title but were behind early in the match.

Yui Hasegawa set up Yuka Momiki for the opener in the second minute of play at the Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego.

A wonderful piece of display from USWNT led to the equalizer as Catarina Macario had a good turn before providing a through ball to Allyson Sentnor, who leveled the scoreline.

Five minutes into the second half, the 2011 World champions had the last laugh as Toko Koga scored the winner.

The game was the first time that USWNT would lose a match under coach Emma Hayes.

The result also ended USWNT’s five-year grip on the Shebelieves Cup title as Japan won the trophy for the first time.

Since 2019 when England won the title, Japan emerged as the fourth team to win it after USWNT, France, and England.
