Jurgen Klopp’s men are on course for a quadruple of titles as they bid to become the first English side to win all trophies they entered for in a single season.

Matip scored Liverpool’s winner after the club had gone behind to a Nathan Redmond goal at St Mary’s which was levelled by former Saints Takumi Minano.

Manchester City have a one point advantage and a superior goal difference as they welcome Aston Villa to the Etihad while Liverpool play host to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Liverpool retain a slight hope in the title race as Aston Villa is coached by Kop legend Steven Gerrard but Aston Villa having sold Jack Grealish to City last summer are entitled to a performance related bonus of up to £15m should the Citizens win the league.

Matip has however urged his team to focus on happenings at Anfield alone and not get worried about the situation at their rival’s stadium.

Matip told the club’s website: “It will be hard enough and if our head is somewhere else, that would make it even more of a tough challenge. “We can only look at our game. It will be tough enough to play against Wolves, and our full concentration is on Wolves – that’s the only thing we can change and that’s what we are doing.

“We will just try our best. We just can play our games and that’s what we are concentrating on. We try to make it as exciting as possible.”

The 30 year old explained he didn’t know how he had the ball in the net against Southampton. He said to journalists after the game: “Just happy. I don’t know how it ended up as a goal, to be honest, but it doesn’t matter. We played well and deserved to win. Everybody was working quite hard.

“I think I touched it, but in the end, how it ended up there in the net I’m not sure – but I don’t care, to be honest.”

Meanwhile…

Ivorian international Nicolas Pepe has finally decided to leave Arsenal after three unsuccessful years at the club.

The former Lille attacker cost the Gunners a record £72m in the summer of 2019 after whining for Lille in the French league but has struggled to replicate that form that made Arsenal break the bank for him.

He has been reduced to a bit part role under Mikel Arteta this season with just three goals and five assists in twenty two appearances.

He recently changed his agent and according to football.london, he has instructed his new representatives to find him a new club this summer.

The thirteen time Premier League champions are open to a sale as they do not see the 26 year old as part of coach Mikel Arteta’s plans for he future.

A move back to France could now be on the cards but Arsenal would be expected the lower their asking price.
