John Nelson: LA Galaxy Lock Down Key Defender Through 2027
LA Galaxy have secured defender John Nelson with a contract extension that keeps him on the roster through 2027-28, including a club option for the 2028-29 campaign.

Since joining the club in late 2023, the 27-year-old has become a vital component of the Galaxy’s defense.

His 2025 performance was particularly standout; he played a career-high 31 games and was named the team’s Defender of the Year.
Known for his reliability at left back, Nelson ended last season with a personal best of three assists and a strong defensive stat line of 36 aerial wins and 22 clearances.

In two seasons with the LA Galaxy, Nelson has tallied over 70 appearances, recording one goal and three assists. His lone goal was a highlight of the 2024 postseason, occurring during a 5-0 playoff victory against Colorado.

Defensively, Nelson’s 2025 campaign was marked by aerial dominance in wins over Sporting KC and Minnesota, as well as a strong finish with consecutive multi-clearance games. Additionally, he earned starts in two of the club’s four shutouts that year.
Nelson joins the Galaxy with seven years of MLS league experience. After being selected 10th overall in the 2019 MLS SuperDraft following a successful tenure at the University of North Carolina, the Medina, Ohio native played two seasons for FC Dallas.
He later moved to FC Cincinnati in 2022, where he made 26 appearances across various competitions and tallied one assist.
