In the late hours of yesterday and the early hours of today, reports emerged that Jose Mourinho, the coach of Italian side, AS Roma is on the verge of losing his job as the Giallorosi were close to replacing him as their manager.

More Details

The report further confirmed that Mourinho’s job could be on the line on Sunday after Roma’s somewhat indifferent start to their Serie A campaign. Should the Giallorossi lose to away to winless Cagliari, just as they did against Verona and Genoa, both of whom sit below Roma in the table, then the Portuguese manager could be relieved of his duties.

According to Il Corriere dello Sport, Roma owner Dan Friedkin is ‘ready’ to sack José Mourinho and hire Hans-Dieter Flick if the Giallorossi lose against Cagliari on Sunday. The reports stated that the Giallorossi President is ready to sack Mourinho if the Giallorossi lose at the Sardegna Arena tomorrow.

The report claims Friedkin had already decided to part company with Mourinho after a 4-1 loss against Genoa on September 28, but director Tiago Pinto persuaded the President to change his mind and stick with the legendary manager.

The report adds that Friedkin has already contacted and blocked Mourinho’s replacement, former Germany and Bayern Munich boss Flick. Roma have won two games from two in Europa League, but have had a bad start to the season in Serie A with just two wins in the opening seven league games. Mourinho has less than a year left in his contract at the Stadio Olimpico, expiring in June 2024.

But a new report from ANSA call the report ‘fake’ saying the club has not thought about sacking Mourinho or ever contacted Flick. The report is said to have gotten their own news directly from a source within the club.

For the moment, it’s left to be seen how the team will react tomorrow, when they face Cagliari, but it’s very much obvious that they need a win desperately to help them get some sort of momentum going as they’ve been blowing hot and cold since the start of the season.

Meanwhile…

The former Chelsea and Manchester United manager claims he will ‘coach in Saudi Arabia one day’ but insists he will give his all for Roma ‘until the last day.’ The Special One has released an interview with elhekayashow saying he will work for a Saudi club one day.

“I am focused on Roma and I will give my all until the last day I am here. Nobody knows the future, but I am convinced I will coach in Saudi Arabia one day,” said the Portuguese coach. “I don’t know when, but I am quite sure it’s something I’ll surely do.”

Mourinho’s contract at the Stadio Olimpico expires in June 2024 and there are no reports of ongoing talks between the club and the coach to extend their agreement. Talking about a possible future move to Saudi Arabia, Mourinho added:

“I think it’s the Cristiano Ronaldo effect. He was the first one to go there and change the perspective. It is proved by the fact that players going there are not at the end of their careers, but in their best years. Competition is real in Saudi Arabia.”

Mourinho joined Roma in 2021 and won the Conference League with the Giallorossi in his first season at the club, reaching the Europa League Final in 2022-23. He has only won two Serie A games from the opening seven this season collecting eight points.
