Bayern Munich were surprisingly dumped out of this season’s Champions League by lowly rated Villarreal who took advantage of Bayern’s profligacy to secure a late equalizer which sent them to the last four of the competition.

Robert Lewandowski had levelled the tie in the 52nd minute off an assist by Muller but the Bavarians failed to make the most of the opportunities that came their way.

Villarreal defended in numbers and had their tactics spot on as their low block proved too strong for the home side.

Bayern were limited to just four shots on target and Muller was presented with a glorious opportunity to win it for the six time champions but saw his effort go wide with his manager now pointing to the miss as the reason for their loss.

“Thomas has to score that, you don’t get many of those.” His miss allowed Villarreal to stay in the game and substitute Samuel Chukwueze to bag a late equalise, only four minutes after coming on, which gave Emery’s side the lead again. He told Prime Video Deutschland.

Nagelsmann added: “The first leg was key, we weren’t good enough there. Today was one of our best games of the last few weeks. We had a lot of intensity right from the start. It’s hard to create chances against such a deep block.” The 34-year-old coaching prodigy will now face a serious inquest in Munich but declared: “I’m not afraid. There are worse things in the world.”

Muller was as well critical of the situation himself as he admitted bitterness at his side crashing out at this stage adding: “It’s extremely bitter that we conceded a goal towards the end despite the good performance. We played a good game. We have to blame ourselves for only scoring one goal. The course of the game did not deserve a 1-1 result. I don’t know what else to say. Accepting this defeat is extremely difficult, very difficult.”

Villarreal are now through to the last four for the first time in sixteen years and would face the winner of the tie between Atletico Madrid and Manchester City.

Meanwhile…

Villarreal forward Gerard Moreno has taken a slight dig at the Bayern Munich coach following comments he made after the first leg loss.

The German tactician said the Yellow Submarines “made the mistake of letting us live” after the lone goal victory in the first leg with Moreno now referring the former Hoffenheim coach to his words.

“In the first leg we made the mistake of not finishing the tie, and all these comments serve as motivation for us. They made the mistake today of not killing us off and we took advantage of that. What this team has done is great.”

Samuel Chukwueze scored the equalizer a few minutes after coming on in the second half and defender Juan Foyth has explained what it means to the whole of the club.

He told BT Sport after the game: “It is a special night for the club and for the town, it is a historic moment. We competed really well and tonight, we will celebrate then tomorrow, we will go again. The equaliser? I knew from the moment that went in we would need to maintain our concentration and to continue to defend well against some unbelievable. Kingsley Coman is the hardest player in a one-vs-one that I have played against. The victory took a lot of patience, a lot of concentration and a lot of calmness. We watched a lot of videos of Bayern Munich playing and we did the job on the pitch.”
