Juventus Add Borussia Dortmund Star To Their Striker Wishlist

Written By Onyeka Daniel

It is well known that Italian giants, Juventus are looking to strengthen their team in the upcoming January transfer window and with their attack and defense needing the most attention, there is growing concern where the funds for the signings will come from, after spending so much during the summer and there is the option of selling one or two players.

But one player that they will probably not sell is Brazilian midfielder, Douglas Luiz. According to a report from Calciomercato, despite a challenging start to his Turin career, the club remains committed to the player that was signed in the summer. He joined the Bianconeri in a high-profile €50 million deal from Aston Villa but has struggled to meet expectations in his first few months with the club.

In recent weeks, there have seen numerous transfer rumours linking Luiz with a potential return to England. However, Juventus is acutely aware that recouping their significant investment in the current market would be unlikely. Rather than selling at a loss and needing to find a replacement, the club has decided to continue backing the Brazilian international.

The decision to retain Luiz means that Juventus’ limited transfer budget will be directed elsewhere. With long-term injuries to defenders Bremer and Juan Cabal, both of whom have undergone cruciate ligament surgery, reinforcing the backline has become a priority. The club aims to bring in at least one defensive signing during the upcoming transfer window.

If additional funds become available, Juventus may consider strengthening their attack. However, any major midfield restructuring has been postponed until the summer transfer window. For their attack, they’ve reportedly added Borussia Dortmund attacker Donyell Malen to their ever-growing January shortlist.

Although Cristiano Giuntoli insisted the club is only in the market for a new defender, most sources suspect Arkadiusz Milik’s return wouldn’t be a sufficient boost for the attacking department, as the Director had claimed. Hence, the Bianconeri are being linked with a host of strikers, especially one who can offer something different from Dusan Vlahovic, the likes of Joshua Zirkzee and Giacomo Raspadori.

But according to Corriere dello Sport, the Serie A giants are also keeping tabs on Malen whose future at Signal Iduna Park remains unclear. The 25-year-old started his career at Ajax and then developed his skills at Arsenal’s youth ranks before establishing himself on the senior level with an impressive stint at PSV Eindhoven. His exploits earned him a €30M transfer to Dortmund in the summer of 2021.

But he hasn’t always been a regular starter with the Bundesliga giants. This season, the Netherlands international made 20 appearances across all competitions, many coming off the bench. He contributed with five goals and one assist in the process. Therefore, the player could decide it’s time to move elsewhere where he can gain a more prominent role. His contract with BVB is valid until June 2026.

Hence, the club risks losing its leverage on the situation. Malen primarily plays as a right winger, but can also feature on the left side, or more crucially for Juventus, as a centre-forward. Last summer, the Bianconeri had set their sights on another Dortmund star, Karim Adeyemi, but the deal never materialized, so the Old Lady eventually signed Nico Gonzalez and Francisco Conceicao.
