Juventus Mark Several Key Players For Sell To Offset Thiago Motta’s Exit Fee

Written By Onyeka Daniel

Even though it made logical sense to sack Thiago Motta following a string of bad results on the pitch, Juventus will still have to deal with the financial aspect of that decision as they needed to pay him off due to a clause in his contract with the club.

More Details

The sacking means that the Old Lady will need extra income to balance the books by June 30. Hence, according to a report Gazzetta dello Sport, Juve will hope that Liverpool and Bayern Munich will join Manchester City in a bidding war for Andrea Cambiaso.

The Italian defender is one of three players that the club can sell for profit in the next summer transfer window, including the unimpressive Douglas Luiz and Federico Gatti. According to the report, the Bianconeri would need to raise €30m by the end of the financial year.

This is to cover the costs of Motta’s sacking and maintain its business targets as they try to remain within their financial fair play agreement. A recent report also suggests that Italy international Cambiaso is one of the player Juventus may be forced to sell by June 30 to balance the books.

Manchester City had been heavily linked with the Italian full-back during the winter transfer window, and the Juventus star had already reached an agreement with Pep Guardiola’s side. The Bianconeri will be looking for a sale in the region of €60m over the summer, but they hope the Cityzens won’t be the only club interested.

Bayern Munich had previously sounded out the defender’s availability, while Liverpool may join the race as well, given that the Reds will need a replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold. Dusan Vlahovic is the first player Juventus would put on the market as the Serbian is unwilling to sign a contract extension beyond 2026.

In a surprising twist, the ex-Fiorentina striker hasn’t attracted as many admirers as Cambiaso in recent months, and his summer departure will likely take longer to materialise. The report also mentions Samuel Mbangula, Gatti and Kenan Yildiz as players who can potentially leave Turin if the Bianconeri receive a substantial offer by June 30.

In a related development, recent reports have it that Spanish giants, Real Madrid are ready to pay the €50m release clause in Dean Huijsen’s Bournemouth contract, and now, Juventus fans are left wondering why they let him go so cheaply after the centre-back just made his senior debut for Spain.

He previously represented the Netherlands at various youth levels and some are suggesting that he chose Spain in part because he has his heart set on a move to Real Madrid, which could come true this summer. There is a €50m release clause in his current contract with Bournemouth who signed him from Juventus for just €15.2m in July 2024.

Seeing his development has raised important questions about Juve’s decision to cut him loose so early, especially after his six-month loan experience at Roma. The Bianconeri could still make a healthy profit, as the move to Bournemouth included another €3m in performance-related bonuses and crucially a 10 per cent cut of the future sell-on fee.

That means they can get around €5m if Real Madrid pay the full €50m release clause. He had been picked up by Juve for just €470k from the Malaga academy in 2021, moving rapidly up the ranks from Under-17 to the senior squad in 2023. He ultimately made only one appearance for the senior squad, for 12 minutes in the 1-0 Serie A victory over Milan in October 2023.

There were 14 games for Roma during the six-month loan, in which the defender scored two goals and provided one assist. Meanwhile, Motta’s dismissal puts director Cristiano Giuntoli even more under pressure, as the ex-Napoli director was responsible for choosing the coach and investing over €200m in new signings that mostly failed to justify their price tags.

The work of Giuntoli’s work at Juventus is being questioned by fans and Italian media following Thiago Motta’s sacking. Giuntoli hired Motta last summer, hoping to start a new winning project based on an exciting playing style. However, disappointing results and Motta’s poor relationship with part of the dressing room led to his dismissal.

This doesn’t mean the ex-coach was the only one responsible for Juventus’ depressing campaign. Giuntoli and Motta also made big transfer decisions, parting ways with Wojciech Szczęsny and Federico Chiesa in the summer and Nicolò Fagioli and Danilo in the winter transfer window.
