Juventus Planning Defensive Readjustment For Next Season
Written By Onyeka Daniel
In the last few weeks, the results have been poor for Italian giants, Juventus as they have faltered in their bid to challenge Inter Milan for the Serie A title this season. It is for this reason that the club is planning to change some things in their squad for next season, especially the defense.
More Details
The Bianconeri are reportedly considering a move for their former wingback Leonardo Spinazzola who currently plies his trade at Roma. The 30-year-old is a Juventus youth product who spent several years on loan in the lower divisions before finally getting his breakthrough under the guidance of Gian Piero Gasperini at Atalanta.
The versatile wingback eventually earned his opportunity with the Bianconeri’s first team in 2018/19, and won a Scudetto at the end of the season. Nevertheless, the Turin-based giants decided to send him to Roma on a swap deal that saw Luca Pellegrini heading in the opposite direction.

While Spinazzola quickly cemented himself as a pillar at the Stadio Olimpico, Pellegrini failed to make an impact during his time at Juventus, prompting a transfer to Lazio. Nevertheless, Spinazzola’s contract with the Giallorossi will expire at the end of the season, leaving his future up in the air.
According to a report from TuttoJuve the Bianconeri have requested information on the wingback’s situation. The report claims that the two parties have engaged in informal talks over the past few weeks, but the Juventus management has yet to make a concrete approach.
It is almost assured that the player is highly unlikely to renew his contract with the Giallorossi, who even tried to sell him during the January transfer window. It’s worth noting that Spinazzola’s displays have been on the decline recently.
He was already struggling for playing time when Jose Mourinho was at the helm, and his situation hardly improved following Daniele De Rossi’s appointment, especially with the arrival of a new left-back in the shape of Angelino. This season, the Euro 2020 hero has thus far contributed with a goal and four assists across all competitions.

Also, Juve will be keeping a close eye on Atletico Madrid defender Mario Hermoso in this evening’s Champions League clash. The 28-year-old should feature for Diego Simeone’s side who will take on Inter at San Siro in the first leg of the Round of 16.
The Bianconeri have identified the Spaniard as one of the profiles capable of uplifting their defensive department next season. According to TuttoMercatoWeb, Juventus will take the opportunity to observe Hermoso this evening. The Serie A giants are’looking for a left-footed defender to replace the aging Alex Sandro who will leave the club once his contract expires at the end of the season.

Moreover, Daniele Rugani could also head towards the door since the management has yet to renew his expiring deal. According to the report, Hermoso could fit the bill, and would also be able to join as a free agent. The Spain international started his career at Real Madrid’s academy before making a name for himself at Espanyol.
This prompted a return to the Spanish capital in 2019, but to Real Madrid neighbors, Atletico. The versatile defender can play as a centre-back or a left-back in a four-man defense. Thus, he would be a perfect fit for the left centre-back role in a three-man backline.
This season, Hermoso has thus far made 31 appearances for the Colchoneros across all competitions, contributing with two goals and an assist. His transfer may be connected to the report that Manchester United are preparing to make a serious offer for Brazilian defender, Gleison Bremer in the summer.
