Kansas City Current Appoint Chris Armas As Head Coach, Confirm Key Departures Ahead of 2026

Kansas City Current’s winter of change has gathered momentum, with the 2025 NWSL Shield winners confirming the appointment of a new head coach alongside the departure of key first-team personnel.

More Details

Former MLS head coach Chris Armas has been named the club’s new manager, officially taking over following Vlatko Andonovski’s transition into a Sporting Director role in November.

Announcing the appointment, co-owners Angie and Chris Long expressed confidence in Armas’ ability to sustain the club’s upward trajectory.

“Chris brings an abundance of experience at the highest levels,” the Longs said. “We are confident he will further cultivate and enhance our competitive environment as we continue to pursue championships and expand our global footprint.”

Armas now faces the challenge of steering Kansas City through a period of transition as the club seeks to defend its NWSL Shield crown amid significant squad changes.

One of the most notable departures is Brazilian international Bia Zaneratto, a key figure in the Current’s recent success and a 2025 NWSL MVP candidate. The forward has left the club to explore free agency, a move confirmed by Kansas City on Wednesday.

Sporting Director Vlatko Andonovski paid tribute to the departing star, acknowledging her impact both on and off the pitch.

“Her quality, both on and off the field, will be greatly missed,” Andonovski said. “On behalf of everyone at the Current, we thank Bia for everything she has given to this club and to this city.”

With a new head coach and the loss of a major on-field contributor, Kansas City appear set to enter an untested phase as they prepare for the 2026 season.

After falling short of the NWSL title in 2025 despite winning the Shield, the Current are now rolling the dice on a new direction in their bid to return to the summit.
