In Sunday’s EFL Cup final against Chelsea, Ryan Gravenberch did not break his ankle, but he did injure several ligaments, according to Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

After a strong challenge from Moises Caicedo, the Netherlands international was stretchered off in the 28th minute of the match. Virgil van Dijk’s header midway into extra time helped Liverpool win 1-0, but the success came at a price as Gravenberch was added to Anfield’s lengthy injury list.

“There were two teams fighting very hard, and the referee didn’t have the level of the game. It was not even a foul?! Then the fourth official explaining we cannot give a card… good idea. This situation was obvious for me, everything you need for a card,” Klopp told Sky Sports News after the match.

“They did an x-ray [on Gravenberch], it is not broken but the ligaments got something. I actually feel really bad, but everything else is really good.

“We don’t have a team right now for Wednesday (vs. Southampton in FA Cup). The guys who came on can maybe play again, the rest will get treatment on Monday.

“I love this country to bits, but the schedule is not made for winning a lot. We will see the price we have to pay, but we fight for everything then we see what comes next. Somehow against Southampton there will be a team in Liverpool shirts.”

The win, which required Liverpool to utilise several academy players, including Bobby Clark, Jayden Danns, and James McConnell, was also dubbed “absolutely insane” by Klopp.

Manchester United have announced that Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s official 27.7% takeover of the team in exchange for a £1.3 billion agreement has now been completed.

Ratcliffe said: ‘To become co-owner of Manchester United is a great honour and comes with great responsibility.

‘This marks the completion of the transaction, but just the beginning of our journey to take Manchester United back to the top of English, European and world football, with world-class facilities for our fans. Work to achieve those objectives will accelerate from today.’
