La Liga Match Preview: Real Madrid Vs Real Sociedad

Written By Onyeka Daniel

Real Madrid will welcome Real Sociedad to the Santiago Bernabeu stadium for their round 27 La Liga clash with both teams eager to grab all three points to stay within their own objectives for the season.

Real Madrid, who had to struggle before they could defeat Rayo Vallecano (1-0) in their last La Liga match will be hoping to stretch their lead at the top of the table further after Sevilla were held to a goalless draw, reducing the gap between first and second to five points and the possibility of stretching it to eight points if they should get a win today. Real Sociedad meanwhile, occupy the 6th position on the table, one point behind Barcelona, who occupy the fourth position that guarantees UEFA Champions League football for next season.

With an eye on their UCL second leg tie against PSG on the horizon, Carlo Ancelotti may be tempted to rest some players while given others the opportunity to prove themselves but Sociedad could prove to be a hard but to crack as they usually throw up some surprises.

Style Of Play

Real Madrid will be filing out in their usual 4-3-3 formation but we should see some changes in terms of players that would take to the field. With Toni Kroos and Federico Valverde missing out through injury we could see Camavinga coming in while Luka Modric could be rested as he could be the only available first choice midfielder available for Ancelotti in their must win match against PSG, with Casemiro suspended.

The visitors will be using their usual 4-2-3-1 formation even if they sometimes play the 4-4-2 formation. While they’re expected to go defensive against the Los Blancos, Real Sociedad this season, have gone toe to toe with the top teams. Playing a combination of high press and quick breaks to devastating effect.

Recent Form

Real Madrid have won 9 matches, drawn 3 and lost 3 in their last 15 matches played across all competitions. Real Sociedad in their last 15 matches have won 7, drawn 4 and lost 4.

Head To Head

In their last 15 matches played against each other, Real Madrid clearly have the upper hand with 10 victories as against just 3 for the visitors with 2 stalemates. Last season, this fixture ended in a 1-1 draw, while the Los Blancos defeated them in the first leg tie this season (2-0).

Players To Watch

Karim Benzema and Vinicius Jr have been the standout performers for the Los Blancos in this current campaign but Marco Asensio has been popping up with goals lately and should be able to have his say in this match.

Mikel Oyarzabal is the top scorer for Sociedad this season with 8 goals but in-demand Swedish striker, Alexander Isak still remains the point of reference in attack for the team and he would be keen to add to his 4 goals tally.

Injuries And Suspensions

Toni Kroos (injury) and Federico Valverde (illness) are the only absentee for the Los Blancos. A. Barrenetxea, C. Fernandez, A. Januzaj, N. Monreal, A. Munoz, D. Rico are all out through injury.

All things being equal, Real Madrid are expected to grab all three points but their unconvincing display lately should give the away side the impetus to go for at least a point. Should end in a draw (1-1).
