La Liga Round Up: Week 13, Real Sociedad Still Top Of The Table

Written By Onyeka Daniel

This round of La Liga action kicked off with Athletic Bilbao welcoming Cadiz to the Estadio San Mames. The visitors were able to provide an upset, defeating Bilbao at home (1-0). A S. Sanches goal in the 6th minute was all that separated both sides, despite all efforts deployed by Bilbao they couldn’t find a way through.

Next up was the match between Espanyol and Granada at the RCDE stadium (Espanyol), who ran out winners, scoring two unreplied goals in the 30th (Pedrosa) and 40th minute (De Tomas).

Barcelona threw away a three goal lead away to Celta Vigo to continue their stuttering form. Ansu Fati, Sergio Busquets and Memphis Depay were the scorers before the visitors went to sleep in the second half allowing a Nolito strike and a brace from I. Aspas to grab a point from the match.

A second half brace from Joselu was the deciding factor as Alaves came from a goal down in the first half to grab all three points against their visitors, Levante, who would have thought they would be leaving with a point before the 90+ minute goal from Joselu to complete his brace.

Real Madrid did all the hard work in the first half at the Santiago Bernabeu against Rayo Vallecano, racing to a 2-goal lead at half time. A goal from Toni Kroos and Karim Benzema (14 and 38 minute) was enough to get all three points despite a late effort from the visitors, who pulled one back through veteran striker, Radamel Falcao in the 76th minute but it wasn’t enough.

Villarreal needed a solitary goal from M. Trigueros in the 10th minute to defeat Getafe who remain bottom of the table with just one win. The Yellow Submarines had a P. Alcacer goal disallowed for offside by VAR in the 42nd minute.

Atletico Madrid will be feeling hard done by ill-luck after throwing away a 2-goal lead away to Valencia. Luis Suarez opened the scoring in the 35th minute before an own goal in the 50th minutes from Savic restored parity. The Los Rojiblancos then races to a 2-goal lead, with goals from Griezmann and Vrsaljko. Hugo Duro then popped up with a brace in the 90+2 and 90+6 minutes goal to share the spoil between the two teams.

Real Sociedad have been really surprising this season, leading the La Liga table and they continued with another win, this time, away to Osasuna to go one point clear at the top of the table, even if Real Madrid who are second have played a game less. Two second half goals from M. Merino and A. Januzaj was enough to give them all three points.

Mallorca needed a late goal to grab a point at home to Elche, with the match ending 2-2. All the goals came in the second half after a goalless first half. Sevilla were worthy winners, away to Real Betis. Second half goal from Marcos Acuna and an own goal from Hector Bellerin was all that decided the encounter.

The Real Sociedad match witnessed the only red card issued out in this round of La Liga matches. There were three draws, with two ending in a 3-3 score line and the other ending in a 2-2 score. While 7 wins were recorded, 3 were won away from home.

Real Sociedad continue to defy all odds to stay at the top of the table with 28 points after 13 matches. Real Madrid and Sevilla occupy the 2nd and 3rd positions, level on points at 27 points with both of them haven played 12 games.

Elche, Levante and Getafe occupy the 18th, 19th and 20th positions respectively. Levante are yet to win a match this season, playing 6 draws in the process while Getafe have just one win but have lost 9 games to remain bottom of the table, a position that is a far cry from two seasons ago when they were competing in the Europa League.
