La Liga Week 1 Round Up

The new La Liga season (2021/2022) got underway on Friday, 13th of August with former Getafe coach Jose Bordalas – who was recently appointed by Valencia – welcoming his old side for the opening fixture. The tie was keenly contested as a Carlos Soler penalty in the 11th minute was what separated the two sides at full time.

Valencia held on for the win despite getting red carded in the 3rd minute but parity was restored when Erick Cabaco got a second yellow card as both teams ended the match with 10-men each.

La Liga newcomers, Real Mallorca held Real Betis to a 1-1 draw at their home. Nabil Fekir was provider for Juanmi in the 59th minute for Betis to cancel out an Olivan 25th minute opener. Levante thought they had won their game with a Junior Morales opener in the 39th minute in an away fixture to Cadiz, but Espino rescued a point for the home side in extra time to end the match 1-1.

It was a goalless affair as Osasuna welcomed Espanyol to the RCDE stadium while Real Madrid demolished Alaves 4-1 away from home to kickstart the second spell of Ancelotti reign as manager. Karim Benzema was inspirational for the Los Blancos, grabbing a brace to give them a dream start to the season.

La Liga defending champions, Atletico Madrid needed a brace from Angel Correa to beat Celta Vigo who got a goal of their own from the spot through Iago Aspas. Barcelona played their first official match in the wake of Lionel Messi’s exit from the club and they started it in the best possible way, beating Real Sociedad 4-2 with Danish striker, Martin Braithwaite grabbing a brace while turning provider for Sergi Roberto to give coach Ronald Koeman the perfect start.

Erik Lamela stole the show when Sevilla welcomed new comers, Rayo Vallecano to the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium, grabbing a brace as the Andalusians ran riot, scoring three unreplied goals against their opponents. While Villarreal vs Granada and Elche vs Athletic Bilbao both played out a goalless draw to wrap up the first week of the La Liga season.
