La Liga’s Ambitious USA Game Plan for Barcelona-Atletico Madrid Clash Faces Significant Hurdle – Report
Written by Olaleye Oluwadamilola
The proposed USA headliner plans for the highly anticipated La Liga clash between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid might not go ahead due to the latest revelation involving La Liga president Javier Tebas and the Royal Spanish Football Federation, RFEF.
More Details
Despite initial approval from both clubs, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has decided to withdraw its support for the proposal. The RFEF’s decision comes after consulting with the Spanish Ministry of Sport.
The federation believes that the current institutional instability within the organization makes it an inappropriate time to push through such a dramatic change to the league format.

While La Liga remains committed to its international expansion plans, the immediate future of the Barcelona-Atletico Madrid match in the US is uncertain.
The league may consider resubmitting the proposal at a later date, but for now, the match is scheduled to take place at Montjuic Stadium in Barcelona on December 22nd.

The RFEF’s current state of instability is hindering La Liga’s ambitious plans to host a match in the US. The federation is currently under the control of a temporary Management Committee, a consequence of the disqualification of interim president Pedro Rocha. This interim body has limited authority, restricted to routine operations.
As a result, the RFEF lacks the power to approve major decisions such as moving a match to the US. To resolve this, the federation has sought guidance from the High Council of Sports, which, in turn, has referred the matter to the Administrative Court of Sport for clarification. A decision is not expected until November 14th.
If the Administrative Court determines that the Management Committee possesses the authority to approve the match, the proposal could move forward quickly. However, if the court rules against the committee, it would mark the third failed attempt by La Liga to stage a match in the US.
