La Liga could make it’s debut in America next season with the RFEF putting plans in place.
More Details
La Liga’s plan to have some of their fixtures played in America next season is facing significant backlash from club captains with the clash between Barcelona and Villarreal which is initially scheduled to take place at the Estadio de la Cerámica on December 21 now being considered to be hosted at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida.
The concept of hosting a La Liga match in the United States was first introduced seven years ago, when the league began exploring ways to expand its international presence. Initial plans centered around staging a high-profile clash between Girona and Barcelona in Miami, signaling La Liga’s ambition to break new ground.

However, despite efforts to push the proposal forward, the league has repeatedly faced obstacles in securing the necessary approvals from governing bodies, preventing the match and others like it from taking place on American soil thus far.

None of the La Liga team captains were informed about the decision to host the match in Miami until Monday including Barcelona’s Marc-André ter Stegen and Villarreal’s Dani Parejo as per Mundo Deportivo.
The Spanish Players’ Association (AFE) has since formally requested further details regarding the fixture. While the AFE is not fundamentally opposed to the idea of staging league matches abroad, it has raised several concerns that must be addressed.
These include clarity on rest periods for players, the playing conditions in Miami, insurance coverage, and how the additional revenue from international TV rights will be distributed. The Catalan outlet also reports that the AFE may ultimately veto the proposal if it deems the rest periods inadequate or if sufficient transparency is not provided on the key issues raised.
