The victory was particularly sweet for LAFC, as it served as revenge for their past losses to Tigres in the 2020 Concacaf Champions Cup final and the 2023 Campeones Cup.
“We got a lot out of this tournament so far,” head coach Steve Cherundolo told reporters post-match. “If it’s the end of the road for us, then so be it. A lot of really positive performances from players we haven’t seen a lot of this season.
“And so I think they really use that opportunity to show what they can do and to get valuable minutes moving forward.”
Despite their sluggish start in the first two Leagues Cup matches, LAFC secured a crucial victory against one of North America’s premier teams, Tigres, in their final group stage game. This win, their first-ever against Tigres, earned them three points, keeping their tournament hopes alive.

Denis Bouanga, LAFC’s star forward, was benched for the game against Tigres. In his absence, Cristian Arango Martínez, a rising Venezuelan player, rose to the occasion, accomplishing something that neither Bouanga nor club legend Carlos Vela had managed to do: beat Tigres in a crucial match.
Martínez gave LAFC the lead with a first-half penalty kick, and after Tigres’ Iván López tied the game in the second half, Martínez secured the win with a stunning solo goal.
Martínez has been in top form during the Leagues Cup, scoring three goals in three games. This is a remarkable improvement from his performance in the regular MLS season, where he scored three goals in 19 games.
