Their sacking makes it the 11th and 12th managers to leave their Premier League roles this season – the most in a single campaign. Reacting to the news on Monday, Klopp, whose position has recently been questioned, made a reference to his own team’s form. He said in a press conference:

“What can I say? The elephant in the room is why am I still sitting here in this crazy world? “Last man standing! So, I think both clubs are not where they expect to be. I respect [Potter/Rodgers] a lot. Good people, fantastic managers.”

The Reds boss said that the pressure on your job is now part of football, with sackings a consequence of underachievement. “That’s part of the business, but that is it. Last week (Julian) Nagelsmann and now these two,” he added.

“The season is in a decisive part. People are afraid of not reaching their targets. “I think it’s 12 (sackings) now, which is an awful number. “I think some clubs are underachieving, us too. There are expectations out there, rightly so and if you don’t reach them, you have to accept the decisions.”

He spoke more about his own future, following the weekend’s 4-1 loss against Man City, which left Liverpool in eighth place in the Premier League table: “I don’t like the fact I have to rely on [the past success] but I am fully here, we have to sort it.

“We cannot just continue playing how we do from time to time. I am really disappointed about us that we do this but it happens. We have to find a way out.” Klopp will have a chance to redeem himself after this weekend’s loss to Manchester City, but it will be against Chelsea, who are also in desperate need of points to get their season back on track under a new manager.
