England has rolled through the World Cup group stage, dominating China 6-1 en route to their third straight win and the top of Group D.

More Details

Young playmaker Lauren James has been the star of the week despite starting only two of the team’s three games.

The 21-year-old James was not on England’s 2022 Euros-winning squad but is currently their breakout star of the World Cup.

With two goals and three assists against China, James became the youngest player to have five goal contributions in one World Cup match, and the only player from England.

After a knee injury to Keira Walsh, England moved into a clever three-back system to close out the group, showing technical versatility.

The result was an attacking explosion after two 1-0 wins.

In the first half of Japan’s group-stage clash against Spain, Japan entered their opponent’s penalty area just three times.

They scored on all three entries, en route to a 4-0 drubbing that sets them up as a title favorite entering the knockout rounds.

While Spain attempted over 900 passes, they managed just two shots on goal.

Japan finished the group stage with a perfect 3-0 record, scoring 11 goals and conceding none.
