The former Qatari international footballer who is the ambassador for the 2022 FIFA World Cup holding in the Middle East nation caused controversy on Tuesday when he said in an interview that being gay is a “damage to the mind.”

Salman had told German broadcaster ZDF: “[Homosexuality] is haram. You know what haram [forbidden] means?

“I am not a strict muslim but why is it haram? Because it is damage in the mind,” he said before the interview was stopped by an accompanying official.

Qatar forbids any form of same sex sexuality and punishment ranges from fines to death sentences with the authorities asking that their rules be accepted.

The Lazio fans group despite condemnation from many quarters regarding the words of the ambassador displayed a banner earlier on Thursday supporting the comments of Salman.

Previously, Bayern Munich, during their 6-1 victory over Werder Bremen on Tuesday had displayed a banner that condemned the act of Salman with Leon Goretzka coming out to speak after the game.

“It leaves you speechless that something like this can be said by a World Cup ambassador shortly before a World Cup.” The midfielder said after the game.

The German Football Association (DFB) president Bernd Neuendorf also weighed in on the matter saying he was “stunned” by the World Cup ambassador’s comments.

“The statement discredits the entire LGBTIQ community and reveals an extremely problematic relationship with human rights,” Neuendorf told German publication Bild.

“FIFA should seriously examine whether its ethics committee should deal with this.”

Captains of some European nations will wear armbands carrying “one love” as a means to promote diversity and inclusion.
