Le Harve 0-2 Lille: Zhegrova guns down Le Havre

Lille OSC found their first away win of the season to jump into the European places with a clinical 2-0 victory over Le Havre in nearby Normandy, maintaining their unbeaten H2H record dating back to 1996.

Aiming to replicate a blistering start that saw them go two up in seven minutes against Clermont Foot last time out, Luka Elsner clearly had his men fired up when Issa Soumaré thought he had breached the deadlock five minutes in. He pounced as Leny Yoro’s pressured clearance fell into his path and finished well, only for VAR to overrule due to offside in the build-up. The home side should have been in front with two almost identical chances at the back post, but both Soumaré and Abdoulaye Touré had clearly left their shooting boots at home as they blazed over.
A side with the quality of Les Dogues was always going to grow into the game, evidenced by a moment of individual brilliance moments before the half time whistle. Producing his best Arjen Robben impression, Edon Zhegrova picked up the ball wide on the right and jinked inside two defenders before unleashing an unstoppable left-footed effort into the far corner.

It was a first goal of the season for the Kosovan, who oozed confidence throughout and was causing problems yet again minutes after the restart. His raking long ball from the right was poked goalwards by Ivan Cavaleiro from the tightest of angles. The away side’s luck was clearly in, when Yoann Salmier struggled to adjust his feet and cruelley skewed his clearance beyond a helpless Arthur Desmas.

There will be easier days for Le Havre, who failed to muster much other than a long distance Nabil Alioui effort which was wide of the target as Lille eased to only their third clean sheet in 14 away matches. They are now up to sixth, just three points behind current leaders AS Monaco.
