In the 12th minute, Maxi Moralez nearly put City ahead and Nicolás Ibáñez came close for Tigres. Veteran defender Guido Pizarro leaped highest to head past Freese and give Tigres the lead in the 18th minutes. However, Tigres’ joy was cut short when Maxi Moralez leveled the scores for New York City FC.
After a closely contested first half, City had multiple decent opportunities before halftime, with Santiago Rodríguez twice putting Guzmán to the test from a distance. When the ball came up perfectly for Rodríguez in the 43rd minute, his powerful strike pushed the Tigres goalkeeper to make a good save.
Both teams were keen to try and gain an early advantage, and the second half started off at a similarly rapid clip. Christian McFarlane’s driving drive down the left helped him feed the ball inside to Martínez in the 56th minute.
In the 63rd minute, Tigres hit the woodwork through Ozziel Herrera. The winger eventually cleared the ball after his header from a corner struck Freese’s post. Two minutes later, City took the lead through Rodríguez.
