Mikel Arriola, the president of Liga MX, announced on Sunday that the Leagues Cup will change its format in 2025, doing away with the competition’s month-long break and substituting midweek games.

More Details

“We just approved the new Leagues Cup format. We’re no longer going to hold camps there [in the USA]. We’ll play midweek so Mexican teams don’t struggle, and Liga MX games will be played on the weekends,” said Arriola before the Liga MX final in Monterrey, Mexico.

Liga MX and MLS had to suspend regular season play in the summer for a month in order to play each other in the 2023 and 2024 Leagues Cups.

While MLS teams played at home, Mexican teams travelled throughout the United States, with some even enjoying “hub privileges” in specific towns.

Mexican teams actively demanded a change for 2025 after voicing concerns about yet another inter-league tournament disruption, according to sources who spoke to ESPN. All 18 MLS teams and Liga MX teams will now play midweek games throughout the summer in the competition’s next iteration.

Some teams, including as Inter Miami CF, have independently confirmed their participation in the 2025 edition, even though the MLS participants have not yet been formally revealed.

After Inter Miami won the first Leagues Cup trophy in 2023 and the Columbus Crew defeated LAFC in 2024, MLS now leads Liga MX in Leagues Cup winners.

Along with the trophy, the top two clubs and the third-place finisher receive cash prizes and spots in the Concacaf Champions Cup the following year.
