There are several players who have stood out this season for both club and country and it is on this basis that the two time Premier League champion has made his pick for the top award.

Liverpool are looking to create history by winning on all fronts and the protagonists of that run have obviously been the two African players spearheading that fearful attack week in week out.

Mohammed Salah is the leader in both goals scored and assists made in the Premier League with Liverpool just one point behind leaders, City on the log.

Sadio Mane on the other hand has been instrumental for the Reds as well as his country Senegal. He recently led the Teranga Lions to Nations Cup victory in February while also seeing them through to the World Cup over Salah’s Egypt.

Another candidate for the award is Robert Lewandowski who helped Bayern win their 10th Bundesliga in a row while scoring more than any other player.

Those three players have been immense for their teams but none of them have had as much impact as Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema who has almost single-handedly steered the capital club to La Liga triumph and now the Champions League final.

The Frenchman is the leading scorer in this season’s premier club competition with 15 goals to his name and just two shy of the overall record of seventeen set by former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo.

Benzema is on course to win the Pichichi award for the top goal scorer in the Spanish league while also providing more assists than any other player in the league.

“If you think about the final and to make it even bigger, the two favorites for the Ballon d’Or are Mane and Benzema,” Henry told CBS Sports on Wednesday.

“So that will add a little extra spice into it. I still believe that Benzema is ahead, but if Mane wins it with Liverpool and they do make the quadruple, that would be a pretty strong case. It would be great for Africa, but I’m still going with Benzema.”

The award ceremony comes up in October this year after the conclusion of the regular season. This is the very first time that the whole calendar year wouldn’t be considered.

Meanwhile…

Pep Guardiola after yesterday’s result have now equalled an unwanted record previously held only by Jose Mourinho.

The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich coach is one of the best coaches in the Champions League and has recorded great victories in the competition especially with Barcelona.

The Spanish tactician twice won the UCL during his time with Barcelona but has not been able to replicate that in any of his campaigns outside Catalunya.

Pep with the loss yesterday has now joined his Portuguese counterpart in an unwanted list of having lost six semi final ties in the Champions League, the most of any manager in the tournament’s history.

The three time Premier League winning manager could as well finish a season trophyless for just the second time in his career if he fails to lead City to the title.
