To celebrate the end of the century’s first quarter, Le Journal de Québec has unveiled its list of the 25 most impactful athletes since 2000. Topping the multi-sport ranking is soccer legend Lionel Messi.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner’s recent resume is particularly distinguished: he captained Argentina to a 2022 World Cup victory and recently secured Inter Miami’s inaugural MLS title.
Further cementing his dominance, Messi earned both the Golden Boot and back-to-back MVP honors, with his tenure in Miami set to continue through 2028.
His remarkable stints at both Barcelona and PSG are highlighted by an impressive trophy cabinet, including ten La Liga titles and four Champions League victories.

Following NFL legend Tom Brady in the runner-up spot is Michael Phelps, the record-breaking Olympic swimmer, who takes third. Other iconic names like Serena Williams, Usain Bolt, and LeBron James also feature prominently in the top tier of the rankings.
As for Cristiano Ronaldo, the Al Nassr star and longtime rival of Lionel Messi, he sits further down the list in tenth place. He is preceded by sporting greats Novak Djokovic, Simone Biles, and the late Kobe Bryant.
