Liverpool To Target Midfielder Described As The ‘New De Bruyne’

Written By Onyeka Daniel

It is quite easy to attribute the current slump in form being experienced by English Premier League side, Liverpool, on the exit of Sadio Mane, but from watching them play this season, it is very obvious that their midfield is where they’ve been most deficient.

More Details

The Reds are said to be gearing up for some transfer activities as early as the January transfer window with several names already being touted, from Jude Bellingham to Joao Gomes among others, but a new name has now popped up.

RB Leipzig midfielder, Dominik Szoboszlai is the new name and he has been likened to Manchester City midfielder, Kevin De Bruyne, who has become a household name in the EPL since joining the Cityzens from Wolfsburg in 2015.

As Liverpool continue to evolve and build a new generation, the next step in the club’s metamorphosis must be to find their own equivalent of the Belgian in their squad. This season, only De Bruyne and Lionel Messi have bettered Szoboszlai in terms of assists out of the players in Europe’s top five leagues with the player having already registered 11 in all competitions for Leipzig.

It’s not just his creativity that is a huge asset. Szoboszlai also puts in his fair share of defensive duties and he is adept at winning the ball high up the field. He averages 6.77 possession-adjusted interceptions this season per 90 for Leipzig and to put that into context, that’s more than Declan Rice, who plays in the holding midfield position for West Ham.

While he’s currently valued at about €30 million, he has a release clause of €70 million written into his current contract and except the player explicitly ask and try to force a move, it would be hard for Liverpool to sign him for less than his release clause while their primary target still remains Jude Bellingham, who is expected to cost about €150 million.

Manchester United midfielder, Donny Van de Beek has failed to impress Erik Ten Hag after he was given chances to make a stake in the team during the absence of Bruno Fernandes.

Fernandes was missing against Aston Villa at the weekend due to suspension and while it was expected that Ten Hag would push Christian Eriksen to the role, the coach instead decided to play his Van de Beek.

The Netherlands international failed to impress on his first start in United colours in almost a year against Real Sociedad on Thursday and the game against Aston Villa wasn’t any different.

The Red Devils may be forced to get rid of the player by January or later in the summer in 2023 for a low fee if he fails to improve before then despite his huge price tag.
