Liverpool’s last league title was in 1989/90 season

Michael J. Gelb once said, “Champions know that success is inevitable, that there is no such thing as failure, only feedback”. All through time, we have seen champions leave their mark in history, Michael Jordan, Roger Federer, Cristiano Ronaldo, Tiger Woods, just to name a few. Legends of different sports with one thing in common, never accepting failure, always pushing through every obstacle, every negative comment, never giving in to any form of setback. These champions always have one thing on their minds, success. For most of their followers, it is never surprising to see them stack up medal after medal. Success has become a way of life for them, it is inevitable.

When the premier league was suspended in March due to the devastating effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, it was a major setback for a team that was expected to be crowned champions of England the same month. They were expected to break several records in the process as well, Sir Alex Ferguson’s record for earliest title win was about to be broken, Pep Guardiola’s biggest winning margin (nineteen points from second-placed Manchester United in 2017/18) was also hanging in the balance. Jurgen Klopp’s men have simply been brilliant; their brand of high pressing and a combination of speed, quick movement and width have put them heads and shoulders above every other team in the league. Their never say die spirit in games is an attribute that most clubs can learn from, five points lost from a possible eighty-seven points is not something many would have thought possible at the start of the season. To put it in context, their nearest challenger for the title, Manchester City has lost a whopping twenty-seven points from a possible eighty-four, that is how overwhelming Liverpool has been for the rest of the league.

The premier league trophy is definitely heading to Anfield this season.

Everyone has had one thing or another to say over the past five or six weeks on how to proceed after the COVID pandemic; fans, pundits, critics and neutrals have all raised suggestions on possible ways to move forward. However, the idea that was often talked about was that the league be declared void and no title assigned. Manchester United legend, Rio Ferdinand was very clear when he said that the season “should just be voided”, West Ham vice-chairman, Karren Brady also felt that “the only fair and reasonable thing to do is to declare the whole season null and void”. While ending the league might not totally be a bad idea given the current situation, it will be completely unjust and a bit excessive to leave the title unassigned for the season. It is mathematically still possible for Manchester City to catch up with Liverpool no doubt, however, it will be difficult to find any Manchester City fan that still has faith in the off chance that Liverpool will lose seven of its last nine games. What are the odds that a team with a twenty-five point advantage with nine games left will lose the title?

Liverpool fans can breathe a sigh of relief though; their season no longer hangs in the balance. The premier league is scheduled to continue later this month, they will get to pick up their first league title in thirty years, the nineteenth in their entire history. While rivals might argue that this season’s title is tainted due to the problems that the league has encountered as a result of COVID-19, the reds fans will not be bothered, they can look back on the remarkable season they have had, one that has seen them concede the least, won the most by games by quite a margin and probably end the season with the highest points difference in the league’s history. It is no longer a question of if it will happen, it is now a matter of when. Liverpool’s long-awaited premier league success is inevitable.
