Longstaff Set For Triumphant Tyneside Return After Injury Lay-off

Leeds United received an unexpected lift before Sunday’s clash with Manchester United as Sean Longstaff made a surprise return to the matchday squad.

More Details

Although the midfielder was predicted to be out for several more weeks with an injury sustained in November, Daniel Farke named him on the bench for the 1-1 draw.

While he didn’t see any game time at Elland Road, having the former Newcastle man back is a major morale booster ahead of his return to St James’ Park this Wednesday.

The lifelong Newcastle supporter has been a standout performer in West Yorkshire, establishing himself as a vital fixture in Daniel Farke’s XI. However, his momentum was recently stalled by a calf injury that sidelined him for the club’s previous seven league fixtures.

While Leeds couldn’t quite secure a victory against Manchester United on Sunday, the 1-1 stalemate allowed them to push their unbeaten streak in the Premier League to seven games.

Wednesday night marks Longstaff’s return to St James’ Park for the first time since his summer departure. Although he faced his childhood club as a Leeds player back in August, this will be his debut appearance at the stadium as a member of the visiting team.

Revisiting his decision to join Leeds United, Longstaff said: “I think there is something to be said for a team that wants you and a club that really wants you. I think from the first time I spoke to Leeds, I sort of got a feeling that they really wanted me.

“It just fills you full of confidence and it just makes you want to repay those people. It is a massive, massive football club similar to Newcastle in a lot of ways.

“It was going to take a lot for us to leave Newcastle to be honest and I wasn’t just going to leave to go anywhere so it had to be the right place for me and my family and I think this is a perfect place.
