More Details

Ahead of the crucial Game 2 on Saturday (9:30 pm ET at Providence Park), head coach Mikey Varas has given the team a major boost by confirming that star winger Hirving “Chucky” Lozano is back and available for selection.

This return significantly strengthens San Diego FC’s push in the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs.

“Based on everything that we’ve seen,” Varas announced, “he’ll be traveling to Portland and will be coming off the bench for us.”

Lozano, the club’s inaugural Designated Player, and fellow DP winger Anders Dreyer form one of the league’s most potent offensive pairs.

Their regular-season performance was spectacular, generating a combined total of 28 goals and 29 assists. Lozano, the Mexican star, missed the regular-season finale and Game 1 of the Round One series against the Timbers due to a suspension.

Now, he’s ready to rejoin Dreyer and help their team secure a win in Portland, which would advance them to the Western Conference Semifinals.

“He wants to be part of the group,” Varas said of Lozano’s attitude. “I think it’s the most important thing through actions. That you want to be part of the group is the most important thing for everybody.”

The Chrome-and-Azul had an unprecedented debut year in San Diego, setting Major League Soccer (MLS) records for an expansion team with 63 points and 19 wins. Their historic performance earned them the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference.
