Luka Modric Likens AC Milan To Real Madrid As Serie A Clubs Join The Race For Their Top Star
It has so far been a great start to the 2025-26 season for Italian giants, AC Milan as they’re currently in the thick of the Serie A title race after their recent win over city rivals, Inter Milan in the Milan derby and with no European competition to distract them, they might just do it like Napoli did last season.
More Details
While the club has undergone plenty of changes, the most notable ones are the return of Massimiliano Allegri as coach and the acquisition of Luka Modric and Adrien Rabiot, two experienced players currently anchoring their midfield with great results so far.

Despite his age, the Rossoneri’s gamble on Modric seems to be paying off and for the player, he is delighted to have joined a club close to his immediate former club as the Croatian released an interview with Arena Sport in his native country, talking about his first few months at San Siro.
The former Tottenham Hotspur and Real Madrid star has started all 12 Serie A games with Milan this season, contributing to victories against Inter, Napoli and Roma as they sit second in the Serie A table, level on 25 points with Napoli and just two below table leaders Roma.
“The city is wonderful, and people greatly welcomed me. Both inside the club and outside. My teammates, the coach, the fans, everything is truly top-level. You clearly see that Milan is a great historic club, one of the biggest in the world.” Modric began with in the interview.
“You feel it at every step, so I’m really happy and enjoying all this.” He continued. To say that Modric’s Real Madrid spell was successful is an understatement as the 40-year-old won, among other things, four La Liga titles, six Champions League and the 2018 Ballon d’Or.
He then left the Los Blancos at the end of his contract last summer after playing at the FIFA Club World Cup. “Honestly, it wasn’t easy because I spent 13 years, almost half of my life, in one club and one city. It was one of the most beautiful periods of my life.” He admitted.
“I arrived in Madrid relatively late, at 27, but at the right moment. I was ready for that step. My four years in England helped me a lot. Everything I lived and achieved in Madrid still feels unreal. I think I’ve arrived at a club that, in terms of reputation and history, is very close to Real Madrid,” Modric continued.
“For me, it’s the ideal situation I could have hoped for. Especially because I love Milan, and as a kid, I grew up with Italian football. Milan was the club I adored the most. When the Milan option appeared, for me it was the right one.” He further added in the interview.
Meanwhile, his contract at San Siro expires at the end of the season, but the Rossoneri have an option to extend his stay until 2027 and in a related development, reports in Italy claim that Juventus, Inter and Premier League clubs are interested in signing Mike Maignan as a free agent in June.

The French shot-stopper has inspired many Milan victories this season with some crucial saves, including penalty kick stops on Paulo Dybala and Hakan Calhanoglu in 1-0 wins over Roma and Inter but there is a huge possibility that he could leave the club at the end of the season.
This is because his contract expires in June 2026, and Milan decided to retain the Frenchman at San Siro last summer, despite an offer from Chelsea and now, according to a report from Gazzetta dello Sport, Milan have now offered Maignan a €5m-a-year contract for the next two or three years.
This is an improvement compared to his current €3.2m-a-year salary and the previous contract proposal worth €4m per season but according to the report, Juventus and some Premier League clubs are closely monitoring him while Corriere della Sera reports that even Inter have set their sights on him too.

Furthermore, they report that Maignan’s salary request to Milan is €5.5m per season and it is believed that talks between the club and the player are stalling and that Maignan’s exit on a free transfer in June remains likely at this stage but it’s hard to see him join another Serie A club at this point.
