Written by Olaleye Oluwadamilola

Even for a player of his caliber, Real Madrid star Luka Modric’s victory in a legal battle against the Spanish tax authorities has earned him a sum of €3.5 million. The 38-year-old maintained his innocence despite being charged with fraud by the tax authorities.

More Details

The problem began when Modric left Tottenham Hotspur in 2012 and the tax office asserted that he had a tax home in Spain, despite Modric’s insistence that it was in the UK. The first concern concerned his €1.6 million salary from Real Madrid; however, in 2013 and 2014, an additional €1 million was required for payments made to agents, which the tax office believed to be made in the player’s name.

In addition to the €2.6 million they were owed, Modric was also sentenced to pay a €900k fine; nevertheless, the judge in his case has taken the Croatian captain’s side.
