Lyon Defeat Monterrey To Clinch International Champions Cup

French and European Champions, Lyon thrashed Mexican side, Monterrey 4-0 in the final of the 2022 Women’s International Champions Cup to reclaim the title it lost to Portland Thorns last year.

Lyon pipped Barclays English FA Women’s Super League (WSL) Champions, Chelsea on penalties in the semi-final while Monterrey also edged 2021 winners, Portland Thorns in penalty shootouts.
Lindsey Horan scored the opening goal of 2022 final in the 39th minute from the penalty spot.
The American forward doubled her side’s lead in the 43rd minute from Melvine Malard’s assist before the halftime break at Providence Park, Portland.
Sarah Dabritz scored Lyon’s third goal in the 53rd minute before Eugenie Le Sommer set up Signe Brunn for Lyon’s fourth goal.

Lyon has reached the last three Women’s International Champions Cup (ICC) finals winning the 2019 edition (1-0 against North Carolina Courage) and losing the 2021 edition.
The competition didn’t hold in 2020 due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic which affected major International football competitions.

Guro Reiten scored the solitary goal of the game for Chelsea in the 64th minute.
Portland Thorns will now shift its attention to the NWSL where the team will next face North Carolina Courage on August 28.
Chelsea will open its WSL title campaign against Westham on September 11, 2022.
